Girls 4x800 Relay - No Record, But Suffern Rules

Every track fan and their brothers and sisters were geeked up about another record for the Suffern NY fantastic four as they took to the track for the girls 4x800 Friday night. They had become the first school to break 20:00 outdoors in the 4xMile earlier in the month, and had near misses for USRs in this event a few weeks ago and the DMR indoors.
Freshmen Christy Goldmann and Shelby Greany, and seniors Kara McKenna and Caroline Heidt (in that order) had another wonderful race, but the record wasn’t quite to be. With legs of 2:16.7-2:13.7-2:11.2-2:13.5, they crossed the line in 8:55.32, “merely” the No. 8 time ever. Greany got the team in the lead for good on the first lap of her leg and it grew from there.
“Coach said we’re looking for the win first,” said sr Kara McKenna. She added that it’s (surprisingly, given their success) the first outdoor national title for this generation of Suffern runners. There was a lot of announced encouragement for Heidt to chase the record on the final leg as she ran relatively alone. She went for it, going out in 63, but the pressure didn’t really get to her. “It was hard to hear it. I just gave it my all,” she said.
Suffern will give the national DMR record a go Saturday night.
Probably the most excited team was the runner-up Spirit of Pre TC (Saline HS, MI), which wanted to run a solid race, place high and beat their 9:14 from the Michigan state meet. So 2nd place and a 9:04.91 was a very pleasant surprise. The key was putting sr distance queen Eileen Creutz on the 2nd leg, said Coach Brian Boze. “We knew at some point in the race there would be separation. We wanted to put her up there, get us near the lead group and hang on.”
It worked. After sr Amy Luke’s 2:17.8, Creutz blasted a 2:12.3 to put Saline up with Warwick Valley NY in the battle for 2nd. Then sr Joanne Gabl and Eileen’s soph sister Meagan finished the effort with 2:17.8 and 2:16.8. The time makes them the No. 2 school in state history for the event behind Rockford.
While the squad will have three graduates, Eileen should be able to lead Saline distance relay teams for two years to come.

It was the 25 teams chasing Suffern, NY
who were doing the sufferin'.
"They're doing a great, great job gapping a great, great field," announcer
Doug Speck told the Irwin Belk Stadium crowd.
Suffern had posted the second best time in US history, 8:51.00, just off
the Boys and Girls of Brooklyn 2002 National record of 8:50.41, coming in and
had high hopes of dipping into National record territory.
It just wasn't to be.
Suffern, with no serious challenger on the premises, won it in 8:55.32,
for the eighth best time in US annals.
Christy Goldmann (2:16.9), Shelby Greany (2:13.8), Kara McKenna (2:11.1)
and Caroline Heidt (2:13.6) made it look easy for Suffern.
"We went out pretty slow, actually," said Goldmann. "Then everyone
started to pick it up. We like running at night. The conditions were like this when
we ran 8:51 (at the Warwick Valley, NY meet.)"
Added Heidt: "I'm a little disappointed we didn't get the record, but the
victory was more important."
The Spirit of Pre Track Club/Saline, Michigan girls were a distant second
in 9:04.91 with Irish Road Track Club/Conestoga, Pa. third in 9:07.90.
