Scary Moments for Walter Henning

By John Sullivan

Was there a bigger favorite at this year’s Nike Outdoor Nationals than St Anthony’s jr Walter Henning?  With more than 10 of the top throws this season and 20+ feet on the nearest competitor, you wouldn’t get much argument.  And his US Jr class record improvement 249-2 last Sunday was proof he was still on top of his game.

But a sector foul on his first attempt, a ring foul on the 2nd, and suddenly Henning was down to his last attempt to post a mark to move on to the finals.

As he stepped in for his 3rd attempt, the consensus was he’d be able to “safely” qualify.  And sure enough, with only 3 spins instead of the usual 4, he let loose a long throw.  But he teetered to his left and the hammer sailed near the left sector line.  Suddenly the sure thing was no longer and a meet-ending foul seemed more likely.  But Henning regained his balance and the hammer thudded to earth on legal ground – and the 227-2 effort turned out to be good enough to advance to the finals.

But with this scare out of the way, Henning wasn’t done.  In the 4th round he improved to 239-0.  And a final heave of 247-0 for a new meet record completed his day.

Henning said in the moments after his win, “It was nerve-wracking to foul twice.  And almost on the safety throw.  But you do what you have to do – and I’m glad to get the National title. I was 3rd as a freshman and then 2nd at 213-4 last year.

“So I’ve improved a spot each year – not sure what that means for next year,” he joked.

And his season isn’t over.  “Next up are the Empire State Games (Olympic-style event in New York) qualifying on Tuesday, then the heavier 6K hammer at US Jr Nationals on Friday.”

Walter Henning, the prohibitive favorite in this event, found
himself in big trouble after two rounds. The junior from St. Anthony's High
School in South Huntington, N.Y., had fouled on his first two tries. One throw
was all that stood between him and a major upset. Henning made that throw count,
advancing to the final with a third-round measurement of 227-2. The effort
vaulted him past David Schiedt (Marietta, GA), the leader through the first two
rounds.
It was Henning's show the rest of the way. He increased his advantage with a
239-0 toss in the fourth round. After a fifth-round foul, Henning unleashed a
throw of 247-0 that stretched his lead to 34-feet, three-inches.
It also gave him the meet record. The previous Nike Outdoor standard came in
1999, when Rhode Island's Jacob Freeman threw 242-9.
Schiedt came in second with a best of 212-9 while Michael Zajac (Lynchburg, VA),
placed third with a 208-0 measurement.
