text by Elliott Denman Many thought Saturday's pentathlon champion, sophomore Ryann Krais of Methacton, Pa., a 19-foot leaper with 20 or 21-foot potential, would be the long jump favorite. But that ended when Krais scrathed out of the event after an injury hurdling. DeAna Carson, a Woodrow Wilson High/Long Beach, California, senior, never let her own focus wander, sticking to business and registering an ultra-consistent six-jump series that included the 18-9 winner in round three. Her shortest jump was 18-1. With the competition this tight, Brittni Finch, a Centreville High/Clifton, Va. had the gold within her sights only to fall just short with her round four 18-7 ¼. Three others exceeded 18, headed by Saturday's triple jump champion, Neidra Covington, at 18-4 ¼. Carson had much longer ambitions. "I hurt my right knee in the finals, I just didn't know if it would hold up enough for me to win," she said.
