Released December 22*More than 5,000 athletes from over 150 schools in six states will compete in the 2nd Annual Marine Corps Holiday Classic on Tuesday, December 27th at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory. *Former Mayor David Dinkins, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Actor Harvey Keitel are expected to attend. They are all former Marines, and they will present awards to victorious competitors from 1-3 p.m. The meet will get under way at 9 a.m. Commissioner Kelly’s schedule is subject to change. Marine Corps General Richard Tryon will also be in attendance. He is the Commanding Officer of the Eastern Recruiting Region and Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. *The Marine Corps Relay, featuring teams from New York, New Jersey and the Headquarters Office in Garden City, NY, will be held at 1:30 p.m. *The meet events are all relays with the exception of the boys and girls Invitational 800 Meter Runs, with the boys scheduled for 2 p.m. and the girls at 2:05 p.m. *Among the athletes expected to compete are Aislinn Ryan of Warwick Valley High School, the National High School Cross Country Champion of 2004 (third this year), and Lionel Williams of St. Peter’s, who last year set the national sophomore record and New York State indoor mark for 600 Meters at 1:19.68 at the Archbishop Molloy Stanner Games. *At 1:15 p.m., Corporal Elizabeth Quinones will sing the National Anthem accompanied by the Marine Corps Color Guard. Athletes will compete for prizes throughout the day in the Marine Corps Chin-Up Challenge. *This past Saturday, the 52nd annual Bishop Loughlin Games were held at the Armory. Lynne Layne of New Rochelle High School, the National Scholastic Indoor champion at 60 Meters, set the meet record for 55 Meters at 6.99. Layne, the New York State outdoor champion at 100 and 200 Meters who will attend the University of Tennessee, also won the Long Jump at 18-3 3/4. In the Section 1 Kickoff a week earlier, Layne set the Section 1 mark for 300 Meters at 39.4. Williams of St. Peter’s won the 600 Meters in 1:21.24. *Thomas Walls of Woodrow Wilson in New Jersey set a meet record in the 55 Meters at 6.42, while Scott DiCesare of Irvington (New York) tied the meet standard in the Pole Vault at 15-0. Jason Gross of McDonogh (Maryland) set the meet record in the Triple Jump at 47-7 ¼. *New Rochelle won the girls competition with 22 points while Benjamin Cardoza finished second with 16 points. DeMatha of Maryland was the boys winner with 21 points, followed by Simon Gratz of Philadelphia with 17. *Admission to the Marine Corps Holiday Classic is $5, with students and seniors admitted for $3. The action begins at 9 a.m.
