NEW BALANCE TRACK & FIELD CENTER AT THE ARMORY


* The 79th Annual Catholic High School Athletic Association Indoor Championships (CHSAA) will be held at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The competing schools are located in New York City, Long Island and Westchester.

*Among the athletes competing for CHSAA titles will be:
Dan Lewis of Mnsg. Farrell, who won the Two Mile Run at the Bishop Loughlin Games in 9:29.32.
Ryan McDermott of Chaminade, winner of the 3200 Meters at the Citibank Hispanic Games in 9:31.00.
Vito Cannavo of Mnsg. Farrell, who took the mile at the Archbishop Molloy Stanner Games in 4:21.24 and the Bishop Loughlin Games in 4:25.86. He will attend Harvard in the fall.
Lionel Williams of St. Peter’s, who was victorious in the Invitational Boys 800 Meters at the Marine Corps Holiday Classic in 1:54.64. He won the 600 Meters at the Bishop Loughlin Games in 1:21.24. Last season, Williams set the national sophomore indoor record and New York State indoor mark for 600 Meters at 1:19.68.

Walter Henning of St. Anthony’s, one of the nation’s top athletes in the Shot Put and Weight Throw, has entered the Shot Put. He won both events at the Archbishop Molloy Stanner Games, the Shot at 53-5 and the Weight Throw at 79-2. He took the high school Weight Throw at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at 80-7.

*The Second Annual Lafayette Rider Winter Games will be held Friday starting at 6 p.m. Ten colleges will compete. Last year, many competitors in this meet qualified for IC4A and ECAC league meets. The teams are Columbia, Lafayette, Lehigh, Maryland Baltimore County, Moravian, Rutgers men, Penn State women, Rhode Island, St. John’s women and St. Joseph’s.  

*The Sixth Annual New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Friday and Saturday, with more than 2300 athletes from 95 schools, had many outstanding performances. Louisiana State University won the men’s championship with 68 points, while North Carolina took the women’s title with 73 1/2 points. Texas finished second among the men with 60 ½ and LSU, the women’s champion the previous four years, finished second this year with 72 points.

*Among the outstanding performances:
Laura Gerraughty of North Carolina set the Armory and Meet Record in the women’s shot put at 60-7 ¼, the best in the U.S. this year.
Shameka Marshall of Rutgers set the Armory and Meet Record in the women’s long jump at 21-3 ½.
Clara Horowitz of Duke set the Armory Collegiate and Meet Record in the women’s 3000 Meters at 9:13.45.
Abe Jones of the University of Illinois broke his own Meet Record in the men’s 500 Meters, running 1:01.40.
Julianna Reed of the University of Pittsburgh set the Meet Record in the women’s 500 Meters at 1:13.22.
Zaia Wharton of American University set the Meet Record in the women’s 1000 Meters at 2:51.95.
Xavier Carter of Louisiana State University ran an outstanding 46.40 in the men’s 400 Meters.

*The Metropolitan Intercollegiate Championships were held Sunday. Rutgers won both the men’s and women’s titles, the men totaling 196 points and the women 166. Following are results.
