Actual Predicted Comments
Ayalew Taye MA
1 4 Pretty impressive for his first competitive race of the year.
Sintayehu Taye MA
2 2 Is the best Taye brother whoever happens to have "it" on a given day?
Noel Bateman NY
3 10 Always a NY contender; rises to the occasion for his best race of the year.
Greg Kelsey NY
4 2nd 10 Has been getting better each week, but this is a big jump.
Tradelle Ward CT
5 2nd 10 In Koloseus's shadow most of year; suddenly at level anticipated earlier.
Brian Rhodes-Devey NY
6 1 Red hot coming in, but it's hard to run great three weeks in a row.
Jeffery Perrella NJ
7 2nd 10 Considered third-best Jersey guy, suddenly steps it up big.
Jay Koloseus CT
8 9 Slipped a bit last two races, but still could be very good in SD.
Keith Capecci PA
9 2nd 10 Close to Craig Miller at state, made sure PA would have male finalist again.
Josh Hibbs PA
10 HM Showed signs of this talent at Mid-East meet, now in the big time.
Thomas Webb RI
17 8 Ran great in New Englands and Great Amer., but inconsistent.
Ben Massam NJ
23 5 Won all the big meets all year until last two weeks it caught up with him.
Craig Forys NJ
28 3 Unfortunate fall after getting to a peak at the right time in NJ.
Steve Murdock NY
DNF 7 The course also got him, but he will have NTN for redemption.
Steve Duplinsky MD
DNS 6 Word is that he was sick.

Foot Locker Northeast Boys: Only got five of ten here (worst, predictions-wise) … Neither of the two NE returnees from San Diego made it to the line (Ryan Sheridan, Craig Miller), but the next three back from the 2004 NE race (Tradelle Ward, Ayalew Taye, Noel Bateman) all qualified this time … One of our insiders had been telling us all year that Bateman was going to pop one, and he was right … You couldn’t know how the Tayes were going to be over hill and dale until challenged, and they came through with flying colors … Greg Kelsey, Ward, Jeff Perrella, Keith Capecci, and Josh Hibbs had ALL been playing second (or more) banana in their states all year to the Millers, Massams, Murdocks, and Koloseuses and so on, and look how they came up … Kelsey, of course, finds himself in Portland and SD back-to-back … In these runners’ wakes, of course, are Ben Massam, Craig Forys, Steve Murdock (will run NTN, though), and Tom Webb … Definitely a race for underdogs over the favorites.

Girls

NAME
Actual Predicted Comments
Nicole Blood NY
1 2 Had a solid fall on her own, but a complete return to the top was unexpected
Aislinn Ryan NY
2 1 Recent inconsistency puts her in the underdog role again.
Caitlin Lane NY
3 4 Has become a very solid runner the last several weeks.
Lindsey Ferguson NY
4 6 Closer to (or ahead of) many of the "big guns" than was expected.
Danielle Tauro NJ
5 3 Solid race, but she may well have another gear in SD.
Liz Costello PA
6 9 Late-race determination took her from the edge to middle of top ten.
Briana Jackucewicz NJ
7 2nd 10 Indoor 5k record-holder peaking well late in year.
Liz Deir NY
8 HM Just a huge career race by NY standout from smaller class.
Hannah Davidson NY
9 7 Couldn't stay with teammate and cut it a bit close, but she's in.
Shelby Greany NY
10 2nd 10 Solid performance by the consistent freshman.
Kara McKenna NY
11 2nd 10 A heartbreaker, with teammate taking final spot ahead of her.
Kristy Longman NY
12 NR Great race by underrated NY runner.
Amanda Marino NJ
15 8 Didn't quite continue great run of consecutive races behind Tauro.
Cassie Hintz ME
33 5 A big shock here from someone I thought was a lock.
Amanda Griggs NY
72 10 Foot injury manifested itself during race; she was on crutches afterward.

Foot Locker Northeast Girls: Picked seven of ten here, but boy, it did not come out like I thought … The five who qualified last year and returned – the current and former Saratogans and Aislinn Ryan – pretty much all made it with flying colors … It seemed for awhile this fall like Nicole Blood and Caitlin Lane had regressed, but they were absolutely as good or better than ever last Saturday – wow! … Blood is now in position to get a national title again (what a wrap that would be on her CC career!), but Ryan is now the surprising underdog and we’ll wait to see if San Diego will again be hers … I think Danielle Tauro will have another gear; we didn’t see quite her best … Great job backing up their creds by Liz Costello and Bri Jackucewicz … And what a race for Liz Deir … Heartbreak, though, for several runners, most notably Kara McKenna getting nosed out by her teammate Shelby Greany for the last spot, as well as Cassie Hintz, Amanda Marino, and Amanda Griggs

South

Boys

Michael Eaton KY
1 1 Expected winner, but still very impressive ... should contend for win in SD.
Daniel Gerber TX
2 2nd 10 State meet (11th in 5A) not true form; I was warned about Woodlands guys!
Jack Bolas NC
3 3 Planned to conserve for FL South-NTN-FL Nationals triple.
Ben Hubers GA
4 7 GA's finest comes up big ... but nationals are a whole new ballgame.
Duncan Phillips TX
5 4 TX 5A champ continues to ride his peak well.
Brad Siragusa VA
6 9 Talk about peaking ... great races here & at state after underachieving season.
Justin Harbor FL
7 6 Doubted him after state & FACA; can he beat last year's finals disaster, too?
Sandy Roberts NC
8 2 Seems to be on downward trend, but says he's still peaking and wants to win.
Colby Lowe TX
9 5 Fine race for only FL soph male qualifier ... Finals are hard on sophs, though.
Rob Sorrell TN
10 2nd 10 Back in top form to lead strong trio of finishers from TN.
Clay Hannah TN
11 HM Beat a lot of good runners here, though he was actually #10 returnee.
Tom Divinnie TN
12 HM Third in a great effort by TN guys.
Jay Heller GA
13 HM Pretty big surprise ... and he and Hubers are both juniors.
Kevin Schwab OK
20 8 Improvement from last year, but obviously not what he wanted.
Mike Spooner VA
39 10 Form slipped quite a bit since region meet.

Foot Locker South Boys: Picked eight of ten (best region, prediction-wise) … All four South boys returning from nationals made the team, just in a different order, while two of the other top eight returnees also made it … Sandy Roberts was expected to win early in the year, but had lost to Jack Bolas in three races before here. He told The Charlotte Observer that he’s still peaking and still hopes to win in San Diego, so don’t count him out … Our regional editor John Sullivan told me that The Woodlands runners rise to the occasion at FL South, so I shouldn’t have been surprised Daniel Gerber returned to great form (actually surpassing anything he’d done all year) … Texans Duncan Phillips and Colby Lowe ran very strong as well … Insiders also told me Harbor would have plenty more than he’d show in recent races and they were right … No. 6 returnee Brad Siragusa hadn’t shown much this year until state, but nailed that spot after a great state meet.

Girls

NAME
Actual Predicted Comments
Nichole Jones TX
1 9 Definitely talented, but surprised and impressed by pulling this off.
Kate Niehaus SC
2 4 After joining elite 4-for-4 club, she'll try and finally get in that national top 10.
Aurora Scott VA
3 2 Under the radar a bit after fine Gr. Amer. race, but repeat bid in fine fashion.
Kathy Kroger TN
4 2nd 10 Emerging freshman proves she's for real ... it'll be much tougher in SD.
Bona Jones FL
5 3 Popular senior caps off great late-season surge.
Catherine White VA
6 7 Ditto for VA champion, except she's just a junior.
Kelly Parrish FL
7 6 All-time g reat Fla. senior picks up another bid.
Emily Reese GA
8 2nd 10 The best of the great Ga. trio at her best at the right time.
Miranda Walker TX
9 10 Won't have to wait for bid this time. Again, two Southlakers in NTN, SD.
Brooke Upshaw TX
10 5 Squeaks into final spot, but with 11 sec. to spare as it turned out.
Jackie Drouin GA
11 2nd 10 A tough near-miss for outstanding Ga. senior.
Cheryl Spring TX
12 2nd 10 Nice peak and exemplar of Texas depth.
Loren Hodges TX
13 NR My man in Texas warned me that this 2A champ would be up there, too.
Ashley Brasovan FL
16 1 Painful learning experience in just second "big" race of career (Gr. Amer.)
Emily Borsare GA
18 8 Most talented of Ga. trio, but can't improve on last year's finish.

Foot Locker South Girls: Again, got eight of ten (best region, prediction-wise) … Five of the six returning girls from the South who ran in San Diego last year made it back … I have a feeling we are going to learn a lot about the talent of Nichole Jones this week and the remaining 1.5 years of her career … And that goes for Kathy Kroeger, too, who’s just a freshman … It was a good race for seniors, with five of the top ten … A lot of people down in Fla. seem pretty excited about Bona Jones making it … While Ashley Brasovan did have the big race experience of Great American (though she was in the seeded race, where she won by almost a minute), she wasn’t “ready for everyone going out like that,” she told regional editor Ben Ackerly. She’s got plenty of years to get it right, though … Were the Southlake girls just trying to qualify, or did they push it to the limit?

Midwest

Boys

NAME
Actual Predicted Comments
Mohamud Ige CO
1 1 Looked relaxed the entire distance with a strong kick this time around.
Landon Peacock MI
2 3 Only one who went after Ige ... How much does he have left in the tank?
Brock Hagerman IN
3 2 Ran in control; says he's finally going to put it all on the line at Balboa
Ryan Craven IL
4 7 Led IL charge with strong, steady race ... was a bit better than I expected
Jeremy Stevens IL
5 4 Ran well, but can probably run better ... lost his breakfast afterward
Dan Roberts CO
6 8 Hard to track down, but emerged from injury strong; may do better yet
Steve Finley IL
7 2nd 10 Emotional leader of IL group stepped it up after so-so run at ME Champs
Noah Shannon CO
8 2nd 10 Pre-season favorite ran better than he has all year.
Evan Jager IL
9 HM Overlooked somewhat (by me at least); was a big part of IL effort
De'Sean Turner IN
10 2nd 10 Strong race, good kick ... Will run NTN and FL Nationals
Mike Torchia MI
11 5 Ran very good time, but was outkicked in tough race.
Charlie Hatch IL
12 HM Not really a big suprise, but ran very, very solid.
Chad Balyo OH
13 6 Ran solid, but great effort by IL guys, few others, brought him to earth.
Josh Mathis MO
27 9 Couldn't quite match state meet performance.
Christian Escareno IL
217 10 Way up there in first mile, then lack of training caught up; great future for him.

Foot Locker Midwest Boys: Predicted six of ten qualifiers … The two from Kenosha who returned after making it to San Diego last year both qualified again (Mohamud Ige, Dan Roberts), plus two of the other top four … Which of the top three from this region does best at nationals may depend on who expended the most effort at Kenosha and has the most left to give … Brock Hagerman has definitely been running conservatively in his last two races, and Ige looked relaxed enough … Landon Peacock, however, has run pretty hard three straight races. Quite the fighter, though … Illinois getting seven in the top 16 was a by-product of talent, sure, but also the concerted effort led by Steve Finley to have a collective game plan for any of the top dogs he could recruit. Boy, did it work (other states, take note) … Christian Escareno didn’t follow the plan, going out hard then badly running out of gas (217th). But his fifth in the Mid-East meet after a season of injury leaves no doubt of his talent and he’ll be back … Roberts moved more than 1,000 miles west yet stayed in the same region. He also overcame injuries to get a return ticket to San Diego from the Crested Butte Academy program.

Girls

NAME
Actual Predicted Comments
Keara Sammons CO
1 2 "The Closer" had the big finish and is learning to win ... but it gets tougher.
Betsy Bies SD
2 1 Might have expended a little much early on, but still great top five contender.
Hanna Grinaker MN
3 HM Wow, what a surprise ... what iron, confidence, and courage will do.
Bria Wetsch MN
4 4 Credit to her for not letting Bies go ... long sought goal finally achieved.
Bridget Franek OH
5 3 Simply steady, solid, and smart from start to finish.
Allison Eckert SD
6 2nd 10 Didn't look like she'd make it back, but did the work after early state meet.
Lindsay Anderson ND
7 9 At Griak meet, it was clear she had the stuff for making it.
Alexandra Banfich IN
8 2nd 10 Mature race from one of only two underclassmen in top 13.
Elizabeth Yetzer MN
9 5 Looks to be lacking somewhat in strength, can use the two weeks to find it.
Merideth Snow MO
10 6 She wasn't going to have another near miss after last year.
Jocelyn Burke WI
11 HM Ran hard and tough with lead pack, but couldn't quite carry Wisconsin.
Cassandra Schenck OH
12 HM Great 5-12 finish for Mantua Crestwood, Ohio!
Rebekah Smeltzer MI
18 8 2004 qualifier didn't run badly, just not the great day she needed.
Kellee Lemcke MI
23 10 Couldn't quite duplicate her super day at Mid-East meet.
Katelyn Bastert IL
75 7 Flu and tendonitis did this extremely talented runner in after a fast start.

Foot Locker Midwest Girls: Got seven of 10 qualifiers right … All three of the returning 2004 qualifers from Midwest (Keara Sammons, Allison Eckert, Elizabeth Yetzer) earned their ticket again … Yetzer and Bria Wetsch looked like far and away the big two in MN this year, but better make it three after Hanna Grinaker’s run. The resolution of an iron deficiency made it clear she’s a huge talent … The presence of the Dakotas, the least populous states in the region, will again be felt with Betsy Bies (SD), Eckert (SD), and Lindsey Anderson (ND). All three will be back next year, too. Anderson’s sister, Krista (05), had an outstanding career, but never qualified. Lindsey still has a way to go before matching her sister’s 10:24y at NON … As great a day as it was for IL boys, the girls couldn’t match it. State champs Katelyn Bastert and Lauren Haberkorn were 75th and 39th, and Shannon Phelan (NTN) skipped it. Amy Laskowske was best in 32nd.

Fantastic NTN race gives him a chance he might not have gotten.
Michael Cybulski
16*
2
Unfortunate victim of the swamp-like conditions at NTN.

Foot Locker West Boys: Got all eight qualifiers correct … just none in the right spot … However, given the “team” effort and lack of competition among the eight once they separated themselves, the order hardly mattered … The problem is, the race didn’t really tell us much about who’s ready to contend for the FL national title … Eventually, though, it was fairly evident that Matt Tebo, Jeff Helmer, and Issac Stoutenburgh couldn’t have gone much faster, that AJ Acosta may not have survived a major move, and that the Mercados, Michael Coe, and Ben Sitler had the most left … Surprisingly, Diego Mercado bounced back fine after the crash in Fresno the week before … Jake Matthews was agonizingly close, but couldn’t close all the way on the eight … Soph sensation German Fernandez closed into the top 10 early in the last mile, but then ran out of gas and faded to 40th … Although none of them had great races, watch for Mikel Thomas CA, Matthew Frerker WA, Max O'Donahue-McDonald WA, and Dustin Martin NM, to join Tebo as top returnees for next year.

From NTN: Kenny Klotz ran an outstanding race to earn the first FL berth, as expected, but Michael Cybulski fell early and wasn’t able to get up in contention … Taylor Nepon ran an outstanding race to lead Mead and earn the second spot.

* - Finish among West entrants
** - Nepon ranked 14th in last West rankings before final FL West/NTN lists.

Solid X among NTN's FL West runners not quite good enough for SD.

Foot Locker West Girls: Picked five of eight qualifiers … The Jordan Hasay over Marie Lawrence result joined the Nicole Blood over Aislinn Ryan outcome as major FL region stunners … Fatigue will be a factor for many runners who’ve raced consecutive weeks in different parts of the country, but Hasay looks like she may be able to survive it best … Important to note that Lawrence ran faster than she did here last year; on the other hand, she wasn’t at her best, it seemed … Crystal Reed, Christy Adamyk, and Alex Kosinski all had great races at the right time, beating girls who’d beaten them the previous week at CIF … Of the 22 California girls who finished in the top 50, only four graduate … 23 girls broke 19 this year compared to 13 last year … Freshman Kevyn Murphy CA just missed the top eight in ninth, but looks to have a great future ahead … as do NM freshmen Tess Amer and Julia Brasher, who were 24th and 25th … Some pretty notable seniors in their states completed their careers, i.e. Vanessa Ortiz NM, Irena Ossola NM, Wendy Parker NV, Hilary McClendon ID, and Samantha Gaffney UT.

From NTN:  Annie St. Geme gave Betsy Bies all she wanted and, in the process, easily claimed the first FL berth … Cassie Ricks led Fremont with a fine race and got a little less competition than expected from other West rivals.

* - Finish among West entrants
***- Ricks ranked 11th in last West rankings before final FL West/NTN lists.
