Great action from Portland, OR where Kenny Klotz from Central Catholic OR dualed it out with Isaac Stoutenburgh from Crater OR. The pack of 3 runners, including Jeff Helmer from Jackson HS, came down the homestretch still undecided of the victor. Klotz was sitting in 3rd place, and made a huge burst to go around Helmer and Stoutenburgh; leaning desperately at the line. (left, photo by Carl Laney) Helmer was left in 3rd overall (15:04), while a photo finish was apparent for Klotz and Stoutenburgh. After about 10 mintues of deliberation, it was declared that Stoutenburgh (right in photo) was the winner (15:03), with Klotz in 2nd with the same time. The difference in time was only .29 seconds! In the end, Klotz's placing was good enough to push NW#7 Central Catholic OR to the winner's podium over NW#6 Boise ID 114 to 134. Coming up 3rd place for teams was visiting HL#1 Liberty MO (143). NW#3 Hermiston OR was 4th, and Los Gatos managed 5th. NW#5 Jesuit OR had a disappointing day; only able to finish 15th overall.
