Donna on the Side |
The 2005 BorderClashby Donna Dyewinners - smiles - the races - Oregon people - Washington people The SceneThe Border Clash is a cross country meet between the states of Oregon and Washington. The top 40 runners (based on the results from each state's state meet) are invited to participate--20 girls and 20 The meet is modeled somewhat on a medieval battle. It's begun with drum rolls, cannon blast and rockets as each team starts the race running into the faces of their opponents--as was the custom in medieval times. The prize: honor and a Nike statue. But unlike medieval times, this meet has a helicopter and plasma computer screens. Overhead during the race, a helicopter followed the runners and transmitted video so that all on the ground could follow the meet in real time. Tents for each team are set up at either end of the starting area with parents and fans lining up on either side. It's a time to strut the colors: blue for Oregon and green for Washington. It's a meet full of smiles, waves and good spirits. And the Winners are....Washington all the way,
