Syosset edges Shaker for 4x800 championship. Holmwood Tech wins 4x100. Wolmer's Boys hold off Poly Long Beach and Dematha in 4x400.

Boys 4x800 Championship
Syosset's Sean Tully (A) catches Shaker's John Maloy at top of stretch.

Syosset NY 7:43.52 and Shaker NY 7:44.82 waged another torrid duel. They were US#1 and US#3 all time indoors when they tied up in February in the Armory Collegiate Games. Then they went their separate ways at the national indoor meets, Shaker winning NSIC in New York and Syosset winning Nike Indoor Nationals in Maryland. They came together again before 44,000 fans in Franklin Field, and it was just as good. Shaker put its anchor from the February race, Joe Belokopitsky, in leadoff and grabbed a big lead with his 1:54.2 split. The strategy worked until the last 100 meters. Syosset worked its way up and was in striking distance as anchor Sean Tully got the stick against Shaker's John Maloy. Tully was patient until starting his kick with 300 meters to go. Tully collared the leader at the top of the stretch and finished a brilliant 1:51.8 split for the win. Another New York team, Shenendehowa 7:52.95 was third. Imagine what the New York state meet will be like.

4x400 thriller at Penn
Wolmer's Boys JAM (C) led the entire way but it was a near dead heat in the last strides(above). Poly Long Beach CA soph Bryshon Nellum (B) lunged (below)to catch Dematha MD (A), but was 0.28 short of Wolmer's 3:12.07. [more].

Boys 4x400 Championship
Poly Long Beach CA and Dematha MD gave Jamaican champion Wolmer's Boys all they could handle, but Wolmer's held on to win in a photo finish with all three teams within 0.33 second -- Wolmer's 3:12.07, Poly 3:12.35 and Dematha 3:12.40. It was Poly anchor Bryshon Nellums who made the race. Getting the stick in third about 5 meters behind the leader, the brilliant sophomore made up almost all the ground and his lunge at the finish caught Dematha, the fastest qualifier, and just missed catching the winners. Wolmer's held the lead throughout, to the delight of the roaring Jamaican fans in attendance, except for Dematha getting in front for a few strides on the third leg..

4x400 anchors turn for home: Tarik Edwards, Wolmer's (C), Jeremy Samuels, Dematha (A) and Bryshon Nellum (B).
