Sprint Medley Relay: Rob Novak's 1:48.6 split brought Bordentown Regional High School from sixth to first place on the anchor leg as the New Jersey squad went on to win in 3:33.37.
Novak churned into the lead just before the bell sounded. He held off a hard charge to the finish by Blake Figgins of Mumford High School , Michigan 's indoor and outdoor 800m champion. Mumford ( Detroit , MI ), competing here as Motor City Track Club, wound up an excruciatingly close second in 3:24.59. Mumford was last year's fifth-place team.
The SMR consists of a pair of 200m legs, followed by a 400 and an 800m. Mike Steffen opened for Bordentown, followed by Dan Millan and Freddie Mendenhall.
�The main thing I wanted to do was make sure no one passed me in the last 100,� said Mendenhall. �All I had to do was make sure no one passed me in the last 100 because I knew Rob was going to pass everyone.�
Novak was determined to avoid a replay of last winter's national meet in Landover, Md., where he surrendered the lead with 55m remaining as Bordentown settled for second place. �When I got the 200m mark I said to myself, �I'm not gonna let this happen again!'� the Seton Hall recruit said. �So then I pushed it, and I heard everyone cheering.�
Third in 3:25.33 was Charles City ( Iowa ), while fourth place in the composite standings went to Archbishop Carroll ( Washington , D.C. ). The Washington squad, which had beaten Bordentown in the SMR at the Nike Indoor Nationals, won an earlier section Friday in 3:27.42.
Novak runs the open 800m Saturday.
