Steve Marcelle (below) came in with solid numbers (66-8 best), but nothing outside the state of Wisconsin. He was up against Ryan Whiting PA, who had ruled this event indoors and out this year, winning Nike Indoor Nationals and Arcadia. "All I wanted was a PR," said Marcelle. "I knew I had to get off a good throw early to have a chance against Whiting." Marcell did get off good early throws. Throwing just in front of Whiting, the Preble Green Bay senior opened at 64-9.75 and improved to his winning mark of 68-00.25 on his third throw, putting Whiting (67-4.25) in front of him for the final rounds. Whiting improved to 67-8 on his fourth throw, but could not pull it out at the end as he did at Nike Indoor. The 6-6 265 pound Marcelle, who was an offensive tackle and defensive lineman on the frozen tundras of Green Bay football, will head south for college next year at Georgia Tech. | |
NON had its own Olympic glade for shot put, an area outside the far turn of the track, which drew a large, appreciative crowd. Here, John Hickey NY gets off a throw under the watchful eye of the official. Hickey was third at 64-3.

Shot put: In a major upset, Steve Marcelle of Preble High School in Green Bay , Wisc., defeated national prep leader Ryan Whiting of Central Dauphin High in Harrisburg , Pa.
Marcelle uncorked a mark of 68-0 ¼ on his third try while Whiting whose 70-0 this year leads the prep charts could only muster a 67-8 in the fourth round.
Whiting is a great thrower, Marcelle told North Carolina A&T sports information director Brian Holloway, so I knew I had to get a good throw right away to get him flustered.
After a first-round 57-10 ½, Whiting fouled on his second try and went 67-4 ¼ in the third round. After his fourth-round 67-8, he fouled on his last two attempts.
I had a decent throw my first time out, said Marcelle, so I knew I could win. It's a big thing if you can get a good throw right away and people all scared. But he had a good throw took so it was a good competition.
Marcelle's series was 64-9 ¾, foul, 68-0 ¼, foul, 65-11 and 67-0 ½.
Marcelle, whose previous best this year was 67-6, is bound for Georgia Tech while Whiting will attend Arizona State . Whiting was the Nike Indoor champ last March and won the Arcadia ( Calif. ) Invitational title in April.

Kamorean Hayes, the Charlotte, NC sophomore, was the only athlete to break 50 feet and won decisively.
Her 51-1 toss easily outclassed Omaha, Nebraska's Michaela Wallerstedt
(49-3 ¾) and the Nike hammer champion, Ashley Muffet of North Canton, Ohio
(48-11.)
And then there was a big gap through to fourth-placer Tara Cooper of Circleville, Ohio at 44-11 ¾.
Karen Shump, a Media, Pa. freshman, was a notable fifth at 44-4 ¼, while NJ state champion Danielle Dailey, a softball player until this year, took sixth at 43-3 ¾.
"I came in expecting to win," said Hayes. "I've been practicing hard, getting focused for this meet.
"My parents and my coach (Shelton Harrison) have been the biggest
influences on my career. They saw early that I had promise." The 51-1 winner came
in round three, the final of the qualifying round.
