Scott Roth celebrates winning jump |
Junior Scott Roth, winner of the prestigious Arcadia Invitational title last April, added the queen mother of all prep track titles to his résumé Saturday.
Roth, from Granite Bay (Calif.) High School, cleared 17-2 ¼ for the Nike Outdoor crown, improving on his national age 16 record just a few days before his 17th birthday. The national prep leader at 17-2, Roth was the only vaulter over 17-feet. Second place went to Mike Morrison (Chesapeake, VA) with Jordan Scott (Watkinsville, GA) third. Morrison and Scott, who are also juniors, both vaulted 16-10 ¼.
Roth said he wasn’t paying attention. “The main thing is – I’m not trying to be selfish – but I make these events about myself. If I can continue to get better, I’m not concerned about the other guys. Getting better will help get competitive no matter what the other guys do.”
Roth said he thought he’d hit a snag at 16-6, when he needed three attempts to clear the bar. “Anything can happen on that third attempt,” he said. “The pole can slip out of your hands. And then you would have come all this way across the country for nothing. But luckily, I’m good under pressure and I cleared it.”

They announced the final competitors when the field got down to six, and the girls had a good time rehearsing the intros.
Lancaster, NY senior Mary Saxer hoped for a lot more than a gold medal.
After all, she'd raised the National indoor record to 14-2 winning the Nike title at Landover, Md. in March, and raised her National outdoor record to
13-9 five weeks ago.
At very least, the Notre Dame-bound high flyer expected to erase the meet record of
13-1 ½ shared by Jenn O'Neil and Lacy Janson.
But she wasn't close to any of that, and actually shared top height of
12-9 ½ with Elma, NY senior Tiffany Maskulinski before winning on the fewer misses rule.
After a warm afternoon, it cooled off for the night events and that wasn't to Saxer's liking.
"I do better in hot weather," said Saxer.
"And a lot of things fell apart in the event. "
Then she saluted her rivals.
"The girls were very supportive of each other out there," she said.
Three others went 12-5 ½, Easton, Pa. junior Lindsay Regan topping Madison, Wisconsin senior Jenny Soceka and Fort Wayne, Indiana sophmore Katie Veith, again on the misses rule.
Top freshman was eighth-place Staci Yahn of Mena, Arkansas at 11-11 ¾.
