100/110m hurdles
|
Carrington Queen (L) and Jared Huske studied the scoreboard for several minutes before the winner ws posted -- Huske won by 0.01 second. Queen immediately turned to congratulate Huske. |
|
Jared Huske, thwarted in an attempt to become the first-ever hurdles doubler at the Nike Outdoor Nationals, figured he was second in the high sticks.
Third in the intermediates just a little over two hours earlier, Huske hoped to salvage a gold medal in his specialty race. Following a false start, Huske had a good start and was out in front at the midway point.
Huske, an Oregon signee from Highland Park High School in Topeka, Kans., got to the tenth hurdle first. But junior Carrington Queen (Boothwyn, PA) seemed to catch up to him as they cleared.
The finish was excruciatingly tight, with no definite winner. The photos finally showed Huske in front of Queen by a sliver, 13.71 to 13.72. Third was Charles Derrickson (Spring Lake, NC) in 13.87 followed by Jordan Seabrook (Indianapolis, IN) and Dennis Martin (Anderson, SC), who tied for fourth in 13.90.
Before Saturday’s competition, associate meet director A.J. Holzherr told Huske he had a shot at being the first to score wins on both hurdles at the championships.
“There was no way I wanted to lose this one,” said Huske. “Carrington and I were bumping each other, and he came on strong at the end. I thought he had a great chance of winning it. I was looking at the board, thinking he won it.”
Huske moved into third place on the 2005 prep list with Queen now tied for fourth. The wind gauge reading for the race was 1.4 meters per second.

Last hurdle -- Pavi'Elle James in lane 3, Trier Young in lane 4, and Theresa Lewis in lane 5.
In dash to the finish line, Lewis (left) loses her balance. |
James (below in blue ) and Young (red) race past the fallen Lewis, who gets up gamely (right) and crosses the finish line with a smile, finishing last, but with an official time. |
Theresa Lewis' misfortune was Pavi' Elle James'
gain,.
With Lewis, the Western High of Baltimore junior, challenging James, the Miami senior, for the lead going into the final hurdle, it seemed anybody's race.
But as James was clearing cleanly, Lewis was crashing to the track.
James went on to a 13.74 triumph over Trier Young, the South Carolina-bound Neptune, N.J. senior who'd won the Golden West title a week ago.
Young, who led Friday's qualifiers in 13.85, improved to 13.82 but settled for the silver.
"I false started in the trials and had to gather myself," said James. "I asked God to calm my anxious spirit and He allowed me to do it.
"To do the best, you've got to be a good technician, but when you get in the blocks you've got to stay focused. That's the most important thing, staying focused."
She'll stay close to home to attend the University of Miami.
