Girls Mile - Sarah Bowman 4:36.95, Brie Felnagle 4:39.71 - one for the ages

Sarah Bowman 4:36.95 outruns Brie Felnagle 4:39.71 in greatest high school girls mile race ever (the only faster times were run in college or elite races). Bowman is US#3 all time and Felnagle is US#5 all time. Only three other girls have ever broken 4:40, including Ari Lambie's 4:39.05 in this meet 2 years ago.

Sarah Bowman VA 4:36.95 ran her usual wall to wall sprint and shrugged off Brie Felnagle's late charge. It was US#3 all time (4:35.24 Polly Plumer 1982 and 4:36.94 Kim Gallagher 1982) and fastest ever in a high school only race. Bowman went out in 67.0 and 2:17.5 for a quarter and half mile, losing all but Felnagle. Felnagle closed steadily and seemed ready to pass on the far turn with her patented finishing kick. But Bowman reached down and repelled the charge to win convincingly. "I told myself, 'You did it this far, you might as well keep going.' " Afterward, Bowman admitted she was going for the record. "I tried, I tried. I wouldn't have told anyone before the race, but I did want the record." Was she happy to end her high school career on such a high note? "Right now it's hard to enjoy. I don't feel so good. I don't want to run the 4x400. (she didn't)" [John Dye}

Determination was written all over Sarah Bowman's face

by ELLIOTT DENMAN

The Warrenton, Va. senior was primed and ready to run the mile of her young life - and if it was going to take a wire-to-wire performance to win it, that was fine, too.
"I was going out at my own pace and if anybody wanted to stay with me, that was fine with me," she said.
Through 400 meters (1:07), 800 (2:17) and 1200 (3:28) she was way out there. Within half a lap, though, Tacoma, Washington senior Brie Felnagle began making her own statement.
At 1400 meters, she came up on Bowman's right shoulder and seemed ready to pounce.
But Bowman was ready to handle any challenger.
She dug down, found another gear, and left Felnagle in her tracks.
And now the real drama was on - Bowman vs. the clock.
(1) Would she take down the National record (Polly Plumer's 4:35.24 in 1982)?
(2) Would she get the Nike meet record (Ari Lambie's 4:39.05 in 2003)? (3) Would she notch the fastest mile ever run in an all-scholastic girls mile race (the Plumer time was achieved in an open race against senior-level rivals.)

Within about 68 seconds, the answers were at hand. The
Answers: No, no, yes.
Bowman kicked home in 4:36.95, to the delight of most of the stadium audience.
No girl had ever run faster in a HS-only race. Lambie's 4:39.05 became history. But Plumer's 4:35.24 hung on by a thread.
"I'm not enjoying this as much as I would like," said Bowman immediately afterward. "I'm not feeling so good right now."
She thinks it would be a good idea for others to adopt her front-running tactics.
"Everybody gets too afraid to take the lead," she said. "I think they're afraid they's going to die."
But that's not Bowman. She's going to go for broke, or collapse trying.
There were plenty of fine marks left in her slipstream.
Felnagle punched in at 4:39.71 and third-place sophomore Danielle Tauro of Southern Regional High School, Stafford, NJ clocked a brilliant 4:43.07, just 67/100ths off the National soph record, Nicole Blood's 4:42.40 for Saratoga Springs in 2004.
Defender Blood, now running apart from her school squad, faded to 11th in 5:02.25, while 15 were breaking five minutes.
The earlier section was hot, too, with Spanaway, Washington eighth-grader Nicole Cochran coming home in 4:51.97, and five more under four minutes.
