His HS career is over; he will start training for cross country at Ohio State University next, while Miller becomes the winter book favorite for next year. [John Dye]
See came, he saw, he conqueredby Pete CavaJeff See came to the Nike Outdoor Nationals. He saw a fine field. And he conquered. As a sophomore, Jeff See gave intimations of greatness at this meet, only to drop out of sight his junior year due to injury. The Ohio State recruit from Middletown, Ohio, kept the promise Saturday with a resounding win over a prime-time mile field. See hung back early in the race, with Ken Cormier (Douglas, AZ) taking the field through the first 400m in 62.3. By the second lap the contestants were running in single file, each within reach of Cormier. Craig Miller (Mannheim Township, PA) took over toward the start of the third lap. Miller, last year’s fourth-placer, paced the field through a 2:05.1 half-mile. Miller began to separate himself, with Cormier second and See moving into third at the start of the third lap. Those three began to move away from the pack. As the final lap began, Justin Switzer (Waterford, MI) moved in behind Miller and briefly took over the lead. See followed as Miller dropped back to third. By now it was a three-man race. On the last curve, See made his move and pulled away. He won going away in 4:04.83, the year’s fastest prep time for the mile. Miller was second in 4:07.19 with Switzer third in 4:08.13. Junior Jack Bolas (Chapel Hill, NC) moved up for fourth place in 4:10.48. “I was expecting the first lap to be faster,” said See. “The guys didn’t make their move until the third lap. I stayed in the back because I was forced to stay there until I was ready to make my move. He [Switzer] made a strong move at 300 and I was just trying to stay up so I could slow down at the finish line.” See plans to take time off and begin training for cross country for the Buckeyes at summer’s end.
