Boys

60 METERS

A Final—J-Mee Samuels (Mt. Tabor, Winston-Salem, N.C., who has run a wind-aided 10.07 for 100 meters and has signed with Arkansas, established a quick lead and was never challenged in recording a 6.72 for the fastest time in the nation and equal 10th all time. Nate Yorks (Colorado High Altitude) was second in 6.80 and junior Cameron Island (CATC/Skyline, Oakland, Ca.) was third in 6.85 for the second and fourth fastest times in the nation.

B Final—Just .06 hundredths separated the entire field, which included three runners from Speed City (Poly, Long Beach, Ca.)—Trevor Patterson, Isaiah Green and Bryshon Nellum. Green, who was the USATF National JO (15-16) 100 meter champion last year, got out quick and then had to hold off Gwantaveus Anderson (Team Memphis/Germantown, Memphis, Tn.), 6.98 to 7.00. Patterson was third at 7.01.

C Final—With just .07 hundredths separating the field it figured to be close and it was with Jeremy Dodson (DATAC, Denver) a wire-to-wire winner in 7.11. Just .05 separated second through fifth with Aaron Campbell (Summit TC) finishing second in 7.18 and Pearson Critchlow (James Logan, Union City, Ca.) in third at 7.22.

200 METERS

A Final—J-Mee Samuels (Mt. Tabor, Winston-Salem) just scooted around the oval eating up the opposition, to win in a meet record 21.47, breaking the old record of 21.58 set by Derrick Jones (Speed City, Long Beach, Ca.) last year. With his time, Samuels took over the national lead and moved into 17th all time. J.T. Scheuerman (Kryptonite/Chaparral, Parker, Co.) was second in 22.10 just edging Justin Oliver (Redan, Stone Mountain, Ga.) by .02 hundredths.

B Final—Jeremy Dodson (DATAC/Denver), running in lane three, was out well and but had to reel in in Gordon McKenzie (Awesome Power/Laurelton, N.Y.) for the win and a short lived nation-leading time of 21.91.

C Final—Gwantaveus Anderson (Team Memphis), running out of lane one, closed quickly to just nip Mikel Thomas (Transit Tech/Brooklyn), 22.68 to 22.75. Pearson Critchlow (James Logan, Union City, Ca.) was third at 22.82.

400 METERS

A Final—Justin Oliver (Redan, Stone Mountain, Ga.) and Clemore Henry (Transit Tech, Brooklyn) were even at 200 but Oliver, who had earlier won the long jump, pulled away for the win in a nation-leading 47.68. J.T. Scheuerman (Kryptonite, Castle Rock, Co.) pulled up on Henry and the two collided with Scheuerman being knocked off the track. Nevertheless Scheuerman came back to finish second in 48.55 and Henry was third in 48.58.

B Final—Mike Liggins (Kryptonite/Chaparral, Parker, Co.) led by just a whisker over Kyle Christoffersen (Bronco TC/Boise, Id.) at 200 but won comfortably in 49.81. Ellis Anderson (Speed City, Poly, Long Beach, Ca.) got up for second in 51.02 and Sean Blair (James Logan, Union City, Ca.) was third in 50.39. Christoffersen was fifth in 51.26.

C Final—Gordon McKenzie (Awesome Power/Laurelton, N.Y.) was the leader at 200 in 23.3 but had to withstand the late charge of Shane Cronin (Colorado High Altitute) to win 50.96 to 51.02.

800 METERS

A Final—Bob Hewitt-Gaffney (Gillette/Gillette, Campbell County, Wy.), who earlier this year ran 1:54.9, had little trouble winning in 1:55.15 with splits of 26.1, 54.4 and 1:25.0. Kevin Pabst (YMCA Team Idaho) was second in 1:57.04 and Chris Anderson (Teeva) was third at 1:58.64.

B Final—David Raminowitz (Tracy Flyers/Merrill West, Tracy, Ca.) led at 400 in 28.7 before Jacob West (Timpview, Provo, Ut.) moved from fourth to first at 600 passed in 1:31.7. However West could not hold off Colin Lyons (Colorado Springs Striders), who took the lead in the last 80 meters to win in 2:01.86. Rabinowitz got up for second in 2:02.79 as West faded to fourth.

C Final—Brian Jones (Wolfpack/Fremont, Plain City, Ut.) passed 400 in 58.3 and just continued to build to a convincing 1:59.85 win. Canadians placed second and third.

1,600 METERS

A Final—Josh Adams (Davis, Kaysville, Ut.) led through splits of 63.7, 2:09.7 and 3:16.5 but Mohamud Ige (Team XC/West, Denver, Co.) was always within striking distance. However, it was not to be as Adams blasted away from Ige for a negative split win of 4:16.26. Last year Adams had best of 4:18.39 and 9:23.06. Ige was second in 4:22.16 and Keane Shuler was third in 4:26.55.

B—Connor Kamm (Skyline, Salt Lake City, Ut.) was among the leaders at 800 in 2:17.7 and them began to pull away at 1,320 in 3:27.2 before pulling away to win easily in 4:34.41.

C Final—Junior Taylor Hansen (Wildcat TC/Woods Cross, Ut.) just ran away from the field passing 800 in 2:13.2 as he built 50-meter lead but Clay Smith (Cortez, Co.), making up at least 30 meters in the last 400, just got up to edge Hansen at the line 4:37.85 to 4:37.99.

3,200 METERS

Junior Jared Rohatinsky (Team Provo, Provo, Ut.) and Adam Ahmed (Team XO/Denver) passed 1,600 at 4:44.6. Jared waited until the last 400 when he put in a sub 60 with a last 200 of 28.2 to win in 9:24.07. Next year Jared can take aim at the meet record of 9:11.05 set by his brother Josh in 2000. Ahmed was second in 9:31.61 and Alden Bahr (Bruin/Mountain View, Oren, Ut.) just edged Brett Kotter at the tape, 9:33.25 to 9:33.44. Nathan Huerta (Tri County/North Monterey County, Castroville, Ca.) was fifth in 9:41.11.

60 METER HURDLES

A Final—Darius Reed (Colorado Flyers/Washington, Denver, Co.) held a clear early lead but then had to hold off the late charge of Jake Hanson (Yelm, Wa.), 7.95 to 8.06. Donn Thompson (Speed City, Poly, Long Beach, Ca.), who was at Canyon Springs (Moreno Valley, Ca.) was third in 8.15. The three times rank second, fourth and sixth in the nation this year.

B Final—Ben Yeh (Fort Collins TC), running in lane one was an easy winner in 8.49. Alex Wilwright (James Logan, Union City, Ut.) was second in 8.67 to just edge Ben Soukup (Sheridan, Wy.) at 8.69.

C Final—Sophomore Terry Prentice (So. Cal. Cheetahs/Diamond Ranch, Pomona), making up for a rather poor prelim on Friday, was a clear winner in 8.43. Ricky McCray (Teeeva) was second in 8.88

4 X 200-METER RELAYS

A Final—Montbello (Denver, Co.) used a 22.0 opening leg from Lionel Lawson to take a lead it never relinquished. Darryl Sampson and Aaron Stubblefield each followed with 22.4 efforts and Tim Greer anchored in 21.9 for a time of 1:28.72. Speed City (Poly, Long Beach, Ca.) was second with Travon Patterson leading off in 22.7 followed by Isaish Green at 22.1, Ellis Anderson at 22.9 and Bryson Nellom anchoring in 22.3 for a time of 1:30.09. DATAC of Denver was third in 1:30.16.

B Final—Southern California Cheetahs just edged Skyline (Salt Lake City), 1:32.95 to 1:33.79

4 X 400-METER RELAYS

A Final—Transit Tech (Brooklyn, N.Y.) staged a very spirited battle with Speed City before Transit Tech prevailed 3:21.07 to 3:21.16. Transit Tech took the early lead and was in control for the first three legs. On the final leg Transit Tech’s Claymore Henry was challenged by Bryson Nellum on the final turn and contact resulted that knocked Nellum into the infield. Nellum regained his balance and closed but never caught Henry. A yellow flag was raised but no disqualification followed and the results stood.
Poly had splits of 50.5 for Donn Thompson, 49.9 for Travon Patterson, 50.8 for Ellis Anderson and 49.9 for Nellum. James Logan (Union City, Ca.) was third in 3:28.31.

B Final—Transit Tech (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won here with its B team in 3:33.17

4 X 800-METER RELAYS

Ric Rojas Running (Boulder, Co.) won race one with an 8:09.78 for the best time of the day followed by Transit Tech (Brooklyn, N.Y.0 in second at 8:14.04. Wolfpack TC (Fremont, Plain City, Ut.) running in race two had the third best time of 8:16.49.

SPRINT MEDLEY RELAY

A Final—Kryptonite (Castle Rock, Co.) held the lead with just the 800 leg remaining but Transit Tech (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came from behind to win, 3:40.67 to 3:42.66.

B Final—Colorado Springs Striders led for much of the way before Cincinnati Express (Westchester,Oh.) took the lead in the final 80 meters to win, 3:38.14 to 3:39.47, with Cincinnati winning the event overall after Transit Tech's time in the seeded final was slower.

HIGH JUMP

Trevor Heiner (Viewmont, Bountiful, Ut.) defeated Clinton Silcock (Lost River, Arco, Id.) on misses at 6-10. Donn Thompson (Speed City/Poly, Long Beach, Ca.) was alone in third at 6-8 and teammate Terrance Austin was fourth on misses at 6-4.

POLE VAULT

Jordan Savidge (Tahoe Athletics/Smith Valley, Smith, Nv.) repeated as champion with a clearance of 15-09.00. Six jumpers cleared 14-03.00 with Ryan Dunlop (Central, Cheyenne, Wy.) and Bobby Biskupiak (Team Montana/Helena, Mt.) tying for second.

LONG JUMP

Justin Oliver (Redan, Stone Mountain, Ga.), the nation's third leading long jumper at 23-10.75, was an easy winner in 23-06.50. Freddie Thompson (Glenarm, Denver) was second at 22-08.75 and Roje Robinson (Middle College, Brooklyn, N.Y.) was third at 22-07.50. Californian’s Nkosinza Balumbu (James Logan, Union City, Ca.) and Terrence Austin (Speed City, Poly, Long Beach) were fourth and fifth at 22-06.50 and 22-04.00, respectively.

TRIPLE JUMP

Nkosinza Balumbu (James Logan, Union City, Ca.) took the early lead at 49-02.50 and then improved on his last jump to 49-03.50 to take over the national lead. Moreno Zapata (Curtis, University Place, Wa.) improved by almost two feet on his final jump to place second at 47-09.00 and Michael Wampler (Aberdeen, Id.) was third at 45.00.25.

SHOT PUT

Junior Eric Flores (Custer, S.D.) defeated the field by more than seven feet with a put of 60-10.50. Christopher Hellekson (Billings, Mt.) was second at 53-05.00 and Brad Charters (Camas, Wa.) was third at 53-02.25.

Girls

60 METERS

A Final—Sophomore Ebony Collins (Teekay/Wilson, Long Beach, Ca.) got out well and led at 50 meters but had to hold off the late charge of junior Shana Woods (Speed City/Poly, Long Beach, Ca.), 7.46. to 7.48 for the two fastest times in the nation. Sophomore Jeneba Tarmoh (Cardinal/Mt. Pleasant, San Jose, Ca.) was a surprise third in 7.54 and Sarah Matthews (Colorado Flyers/Niwot, Longmont, Co.), who was second ranked in the nation, was fifth at 7.55. Tarmoh’s time ranks equal fourth in the nation.

B Final—Junior Ashley Cruder (Colorado Flyers/Washington, Denver), got a rocket start and was never challenged—winning in 7.59. Lollie Onipede (EOYDC) was a second just edging Miranda Garrido (Tracy Flyers/Merrill West, Tracy). 7.76 to 7.81.

C Final—Meia Tezeno (Van Dyke/Hercules, Ca.), a 12.04 sprinter, took a quick lead and powered to a clear win in 7.85. Heather Matherson (Colorado Flyers) just held off DeAna Carson (Teekay/Wilson, Long Beach) for second, 7.93 to 7.95.

200 METERS

A Final—Jeneba Tarmoh (Cardinal/Mt. Pleasant, San Jose, Ca.) , running in lane six, took the early lead but sophomore Ebony Collins, in lane three, assumed command of the race and won easily in 24.02, which equals her outdoor personal best set last year. Sophomore Sa’de Williams (West Coast Heat/Rancho Cucamonga, Ca.) was second in 24.28 and Jeneba Tarmoh (Cardinal, Mt. Pleasant, San Jose, Ca.) was third at 24.39.

B—Sophomore Bianca Knight (Ridgeland, Ms.) had a tough time getting to the Simplot Games with travel changes and lost baggage and it showed in the heats where she did not make the A. However, talent did prevail as she won here in 23.70 for the fastest time in the nation. Her time was just .06 hundredths off the sophomore class record of 24.64 set by Sanya Richards in 2000. Knight’s time also makes her the 11th fastest runner of all time. Khrystal Carter (South Bay/Valley Christian, San Jose, Ca.) was second in 25.56 and Tiana Hood (Teekay/Wilson, Long Beach, Ca.) was third in 25.02.

C—Talaya Owens (DATAC/Denver) took the early lead but could not hold off Ashika Charan (Socal. Cheetahs/Claremont, Ca.), 25.31 to 25.38. Charan scored over 4,300 points in the heptathlon last summer.

400 METERS

A Final—Freshman Elan Hilaire (Zzyzx/Park School, Baltimore, Md.) took the lead at 200 from no less than Nicole Leach (Mach I/West Catholic, Philadelphia), the nation's second fastest runner of all time, and continued to apply the pressure until Leach was able to counter with a furious drive to the tape, making up five meters in the last sixty to win by just .01 hundredth, 54.05 to 54.06. Hilaire’s time is a new national freshman record, breaking the old mark of 54.25 set by the legendary Char Foster in 1995. Hilaire’s time also ranks second in the nation behind Leach’s 53.48. Jeavon Benjamin (Awesome Power/Hempsted, N.Y.) was third in 55.29.

B Final—Idara Otu (Middle College, Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a slight lead over Ashley Patterson (Leduc TC/Canada) at the 200 at 26.9 and then ran a strong last 100 to win in 57.26. Patterson was second in 58.39 and Marina Young (Teekay/Wilson, Long Beach) was third at 59.09.

C Final—Bianca Knight (Ridgeland, Ms.), who ran just 59.99 in the qualifying to miss both the A and B final, passed 200 in 26.6 and then ran a hard final 100 to win in 55.81 for what was then the fifth fastest time in the nation. Chanell Nichols (Colorado Springs Striders) was second in 57.38.

800 METERS

A Final—What was a three person race early on between Heidi Houle (Bruin/Mountain View, Orem, Ut.), Libby Jenke (Heritage/Menlo School, Atherton, Ca.) and Stacy Slight (Cody, Wa.) developed into a dual between Houle and Jenke. Houle led the pair through splits of 30.3 and 31.8. Jenke then put in a serious challenge but could not pass Houle as the two clocked 1:34.1 for 600. Jenke closed again on Houle with 80 meters to go but Houle was able to pull away for the win, 2:07.00 to 2:07.47. The two times place the Houle and Jenke ninth and twelfth on the all time list. Slight finished third in 2:17.02.

B Final—1. Camille Hillstrom (Weber/Pleasant View, Ut.) opened up a good lead at 400 in 1:14.3 but could not hold off Kristin Parker (Capital/Helena, Mt.) who won the race in the last 100 meters, 2:26.57 to 2:27.39.

C Final—Dani Rodriguez (Kryptonite/Denver) took the lead at 400 in 1:12.3 and won easily in 2:27.60. Jami Dixon (Davis, Kaysville, Ut.) closed well to grab second in 2:29.99.

1,600 METERS

A Final—Samantha Gaffney (Bulldog/Father Judge, Salt Lake City) and Gabi Rios-Sotelo (St. Mary’s, Berkeley, Ca.) led the field through the 800 in 2:30.8 before Gaffney assumed control only to see junior Dana Morgan (YMCA Team Idaho) take the lead at the three-quarter mark in 3:51.2 and pull away for the win in 5:05.93. Gaffney was second in 5:11.00 and Evelyn Wing (Heritage/Valley Christian, San Jose, Ca.) was third in 5;13.40.

B Final—Melissa Baird (Payson, Ut.) and Alexis Skarda (Ric Rojas RC/Boulder, Co.) were 1-2 at 800 meters in 2:41.1. Katie Cook (Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne, Wy.) joined the top two at 1,320 but it was Skarda who held of Cook to win, 5:24.76 to 5:26.72. Boyd was third in 5:28.65.

C Final—Freshman Sonja Ponis(Spanish Fork, Ut.) and Katie Chungg (Wolfpack/Plain City, Ut.) were clear of the field at 2:34.0 for 800 meters before Chugg pulled away for a 5:26.74 win. Wendy O’Leary (Aspen Mountain TC/Rock Springs, Co.) passed Anna Tanner (Weber TC/Pleasant Valley, Ut.) for second, 5:32.45 to 5:33.06.

3,200 METERS

Junior Wendy Harris (Lund, Nv.) was in a group of three that passed 1,600 in 5:36.0 before pulling away to win in 11:11.03. Vanessa Hawkins (Timpanogos, Ut.) was second in 11:14.81 and Hayley Oveson (Three Stripes) was third in 11:25.16.

60 METER HURDLES

A Final—The race was over almost before it began as Kira Robinson (Colorado Flyers/Mullen Prep, Denver, Co.), displaying almost flawless form, grabbed the lead immediately and was never challenged, winning in 8.34 to miss the national record by just .01 of a second. Shana Woods (Speed City, Poly, Long Beach, Ca.), looking much better then she did in the heats, was second in 8.59 and Kimyon Broom (Quiet Fire/Serra, Gardena, Ca.) was third a surprise third in 8.74. Woods’ time ranks second in the nation and Broom is now No. 4. Lessley Maxwell (Colorado Flyers/ Montbello, Denver, Co.) was fourth in 8.85 and Saleena Abdur-Rashed (Zzyzx/Bishop Loughlin, Brooklyn, N.Y.) was fifth in 8.89.

B Final—Heather Bergland (Edmonton, Can.) took the lead from the start and showed excellent form in winning in 8.90. Shevell Quinley (Tracy FlyersMerrill West, Tracy, Ca.) got up for second edging sophomore Ke’Niyia Richardson (EOYDC/ Holy Names, Oakland, Ca.), 8.99 to 9.00.

C Final—Freshman Briana Stewart (James Logan, Union City) grabbed a small lead and held it through the finish in 9.08. DeAna Carson (Teekay/Wilson, Long Beach) was a close second in 9.10 followed by Christiana Tupper (Skyline, Issaquah, Wa.) at 9.12.

4 X 200-METER RELAYS

A Final—Teekay (Wilson, Long Beach, Ca.) took the lead right away with Tiana Hood running 24.7. Shalise Williams split 24.5 on the second leg followed by Ebony Collins in 24.1 and DeAna Carson anchored in 25.3 for a time of 1:38.77 -- 16th on the all-time list. Tracy Flyers (Merrill West, Tracy, Ca.) was second in 1:40.94 and Middle College (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was third in 1:41.35.

B Final—Quiet Fire took the early lead but saw Zzyzx (Laurelton, N.Y.) take the lead on the third leg. Ari Beney of Quiet Fire closed quickly on the final leg but could not quite catch Zzyzx, 1:42.35 to 1:42.40.

4 X 400-METER RELAYS

A Final—West Coast Heat (Rancho Cucamonga, Ca.) had a slight lead on Teekay (Wilson, Long Beach, Ca.) after Nicole Stone opened with a 56.8 to Shalise Williams’ 56.9. West Coast increased its lead as freshman Briana Atkins clocked 58.4 to Tiana Hood’s 59.2 but Teekay regained the lead on the third leg as Marian Young checked in with a 58.2 to Allyson Stone’s 59.7 that gave Teekay’s Ebony Collins a three-meter lead over Sa’de Williams, who tried but failed to pass Collins with one lap remaining and fell five meters behind. Williams made one final charge off the final turn but fell just short as Teekay won, 3:48.85 to 3:49.45, for the second and third fastest times in the nation. Williams’s anchor leg was 54.4 and Collins was 54.5. Quiet Fire (Los Angeles) was third in 3:55.77 and Speed City (Poly, Long Beach, Ca.) was fourth at 3:39.35.

B Final—Teekay (Wilson, Long Beach, Ca.) B team just edged Davis (Kaysville, Ut.), 4:05.31 to 4:05.38.

4 X 800-METER RELAYS

Wolfpack TC/Fremont, Plain City, Ut., a fifth place finisher at the Nike Team Nationals cross country meet, had no trouble in winning as Katie Chugg opened up with a 2:25.6 leg followed by sister Jessie Chugg, who chipped in with a 2:30.7 to pass the halfway mark in 4:55.3. Lexie Meyer ran the third 800 in 2:21.5 after an opening 400 of 61.5 split and Cassie Ricks closed with a 2:18.2 for a winning time of 9:37.17. Edmonton (Canada) was second in 9:54.84 and West Coast heat was third at 10:11.84.

SPRINT MEDLEY RELAY

A Final—West Coast Heat (Rancho Cucamonga, Ca.) took the early lead due primarily to sophomore Sa’de Williams’ 55.2 split but Zzyzx got a 2:17.4 anchor leg from Rolanda Bell and that was enough for the win in 4:06.64. James Logan (Union City, Ca.) got up for second in 4:09.66 and West Coast Heat was third in 4:11.04.

B Final—Teekay (Wilson, Long Beach, Ca.) defeated fellow California team Van Dyke (Sacramento), 4:12.75 to 4:15.01.

HIGH JUMP

Defending champion Chelsea Taylor (Colorado Flyers/Montbello, Denver, Co.), who had been left off the original qualifiers for the final list, was the winner in 5-10.00, which equaled her seasonal best. Jayne Goodbody (YMCA Team Idaho/Wendell, Id.) was second in 5-04.00 and Sara Klein (Olympia, Wa.) was third at 5-02.00.

POLE VAULT

Junior Annelise Bertleson (YMCA Team Idaho/Borah, Idaho Falls., Id.) equaled her personal best of 11-09.00 and defeated K. C. Dahlgran (Big Sky, Missoula, Mt.) on misses. Ashley Rosenbaum (YMCA Team Idaho/Nampa, Id. ) was third on misses at 11.03.00.

LONG JUMP

Brittany Daniels (Tracy Flyers/Merrill West, Tracy, Ca.), the national outdoor record holder in the triple jump, had three jumps over 20 feet including meet-record performances of 20-01.50, 20-03.50 and finally 20-05.00 for the second best jump in the nation. It also makes Daniels the sixth best indoor jumper of all time. The old meet mark was 19-11.75 by Shana Woods (Speed City/Poly, Long Beach,., Ca.) last year. Woods was second this year at 19-11.50 making her the third best performer in the nation. Sarah Matthews (Colorado Flyers/Longmont, Niwot, Co.), the national leader at 20-08.50, was third at 19-10.50. DeContee Kaye (James Logan, Union City, Ca.) was fourth at 18-09.00 and Ashika Charan (Socal Cheetahs/Claremont, Ca.) was fifth at 18-00.75

TRIPLE JUMP

Brittany Daniels (Tracy Flyers/Merrill West, Tracy, Ca.), who set a national outdoor record of 44-11.75 last year, inched closer to the indoor record with her winning jump of 43-05.00, which makes her the second best indoor jumper of all time with the second best mark. Only Juliana Yendork (Walnut, Ca.) at 43-11.75 has jumped further. A surprise second was sophomore Ke’Nyia Richardson (EOYDC/Holy Names, Oakland, Ca.), who improved her best by almost two feet with a jump of 41-01.50. That mark betters the sophomore class record of 40-09.00 set by Daniels in 2003 and moves Richardson into 17th on the all time list. Christina Tupper (Skyline, Issaquah, Wa.) was third at 39-07.25, DeContee Kaye (James Logan, Union City, Ca.) was fourth at 39-06.50 and Seqoiya Peggese (Speed City/Poly, Long Beach, Ca.) was fifth at 38-07.50.

SHOT PUT

Michaela Wallerstedt (Burke, Omaha, Nb.) was the winner in a nation-leading 47-04.50 and Stephanie Horton (Tigard, Or.) set a personal best of 45-01.00 in finishing second. Amanda Rollin (Aspen Mountain/Rock Springs, Wy.) was third in 41-06.25.
