Laef Barnes kicks last and best to break open a huge pack

Barnes turns for home - photo and text by John Dye

This was a tightly packed race for 7 laps, with almost everyone still in contention at the bell. Foot Locker champ Ken Cormier went on top at the outset and pulled the pack through a quarter in 63.7. Then Scotland's Ross Toole tried his hand on the lead on lap 3, followed by Cody Harper at the half in 2:09.4. Cormier bounced back on top for the next two laps, completing three quarters in 3:13.2. Kevin Tschirhart, always near the lead, moved sharply at the bell and seemed ready to break open the race. But then Barnes stormed out of turn 2 and had a clear lead by the end of the backstretch, finishing with authority.
