Records are made to be broken. But isn't it more fun when they last a while?

By Don Rich --
In recent years, The National Scholastic Indoor Championships has become
known for providing a feast of National Records. So much so - five in
2001, five in 2002, four in 2003, and a ridiculous six in 2004. But that
level of record frenzy should never be taken for granted. That's why
they're National Records, reserved only for the best athletes and teams
of the year, competing against the best athletes and teams from the
past.

We needed a break, just so we could appreciate the magnitude of what these kids accomplish. This year's NSIC was about the pursuit of those records, and some big ones went down. Just not in the quantity to which we have become accustomed. Simply, there is plenty to celebrate. And for the record holders, there were some really close calls. We'll start there. You should know the Clark family from the 800. Well, Joetta owns the high school Junior Class Record in that event. Sunday, West Catholic's Latavia Thomas (above in the home stretch) came within a half second of
breaking the mark of 2:06.90, when she won the girls event in a US#2 2:07.10.
Thomas was never far from the front, but waited until the final 300 to get in position for a move that came with about 125 meters to go. Her 400 speed is better than anyone in the field, and it showed as she held the gap through the finish. The boys' 800 Senior Class Record nearly went down as well, as Justin Craddock of Williamsville NY ran 1:51.36, just .10 off the 1987 record set by George Kersh. Craddock told Armory announcer John Carroll during his post-race interview that a lot of his competitors think he's going to fade over the final 300, and when they realize he isn't, then it's too late. His time was also a New York State Record. At times, Long Beach Poly and Long Beach Wilson trade records back-and-forth like they own them. Which, is some cases, they do. Well, Wilson came within a second of getting the girls' 4x200 record with a 1:36.82 clocking, Poly had set the record of 1:35.86 in 2003 at NSIC. Long Beach Wilson sophomore Ebony Collins took a crack at adding another class record to her one set as a Freshman in the 200. Here 23.78 win nearly broke Sanya Richards' Sophomore Class Record of 23.64. And in second place, Santana Lowery of Starkville Mississippi went 23.94, to come within striking distance of the Junior Class Record 23.55 owned by Jasmine Lee. Trey Harts, a junior from Lake Charles Louisiana, approached the 21.02 Class Record held by Brendan Christian with a 21.23 in the 200 Trials. He ran 21.25 to win the Finals. Also in the Finals, Baton Rouge Louisiana sophomore Ronnie Alexander went 21.94, just .30 off the Class Record held by Anthony Wiseman. In the girls' 60 meter dash, New Rochelle NY junior Lynne Layne won in 7.43 seconds, which was .11 off the Class Record 7.32 run by Alexis Joyce in 2000. Similarly, Long Beach Wilson sophomore Isaiah Green ran 6.95, good enough for third. The Class Record is 6.73, held by Jerald Watson from 2002. One of the most anticipated races of the day was the girls' 400, where senior Nicole Leach was looking to better the USR 52.10 owned by Sanya Richards in the 400. Leach hasn't been doing the level of speed work as early as she did in 2004 when she ran the #2 all-time 400 of 52.19, setting the Junior Class Record. She gave it everything she had, and actually ran the 3rd best prep 400 with a time of 53.04, her fourth finish under 54 seconds this season - something she had never before done. She'll begin preparation for the 400 hurdles and her defense of the Penn Relays champion title. Another race that promised high drama was the opening 4x800 boys' race. With two teams within a few seconds of the National Record set February 5th of this year by the absent Syosset NY team, which was racing at the Nike Indoor Nationals, the record was there for the taking. But as the race evolved, it was quickly apparent that only Shaker NY had a shot, and they weren't waiting for others to give them a push. They did all the pulling, and missed by just .62 in running the #3 all-time mark of 7:42.84. York Illinois is #2. (for a race summary, read Matt Soja's story. Another near-miss that would have been a lot closer was the girls' Sprint Medley Relay win by West Catholic PA on Friday. Without their senior star Nicole Leach, four underclassmen ran an incredible race, posting the #4 all-time best of 3:56.47. The record of 3:53.17 held by Long Beach Wilson might have been within reach with Leach in the lineup. (for the complete story, read Don Rich's account). History-setting Mary Saxer NY, had a good look at raising her own bar in the girls' Pole Vault on Saturday, nearly clearing 14-00.50. She would accomplish that goal by clearing a new USR of 14-02 on Sunday at NIN. Many believe that they were looking at the future of the US Triple Jump in Brittany Daniels of California. She got off to a bit of rough start, fouling twice in qualifiers before narrowly making the finals field on her third and final attempt. But on her second jump of the finals, she delivered what everyone had expected, a monster jump of 43-04.25, which is the 3rd best prep jump ever. That was within 7.25 inches of the National Record of 43-11.50, set by juliana Yendork. The ones that didn't get away. The boys' Weight Throw is contested at Manhattan College, and for those fortunate enough to see the event, sophomore Walter Henning provided a look at the future while nailing down the Sophomore Class Record with a throw of 69-08.75, which was over three feet longer than the existing record set in 1998 by Joshua McCaughey. His throw also won the event. Junior Shana Woods was everywhere helping her Long Beach Poly team. But she was especially busy Saturday as she competed in the Pentathlon. She came within 19 points of breaking her own meet record of 3,827, coming within two seconds of the needed time in the 800. The highlight of her competition was a 20-10.00 US#1 Long Jump, which is the 7th best performance and 4th best performer ever. She believes with a little more effort throughout the year on the High Jump and Shot Put, she can make great strides toward the USR of 3,978 points. She did sew up the Junior Class Record to go with her Sophomore Class Record, which remains the better of the two. In the boys' 400, Bryant McCombs of Matawan NJ did set a Junior Class Record... his 47.37 win breaking the 47.69 run by the legendary William Reed of Philadelphia. Reed's Sophomore Class Record of 46.84 had been the National Record from 1985 until Elzie Coleman went 45.92 in 2004 at Simplot. And then there's Long Beach Poly. They came to rock the place, and they didn't disappoint in the boys' 4x200. The teaser was a 1:27.28 prelim on Saturday, taking over the US#1 spot from Simon Gratz PA, which had the 2nd best time of the trials at 1:28.00. Everything was set for the rematch on Sunday afternoon. The race was between Poly and Gratz all the way, the the result was a US Record of 1:26.09, smashing the 1:26.90 run by Camden NJ at Eastern States in 2004. Between the two Indoor meets, three National Records were set. We should be thankful we were witness to those. OTHER SUNDAY HIGHLIGHTS: - 4x400: West Catholic 3:41.94 4x400 US#1 and 3rd best all-time with Nicole Leach as anchor - Long Beach Poly boys 3:17.10 US#1 - Mile: Dan McManamon, NY, 4:13.44, Chantelle Dron NH Homeschooled 4:55.46 - Aislinn Ryan NY Warwick Valley 10:26.64, Guor Majak, Concord NH 9:20.69 - Christopher Diaz, TX wins 2nd 1 Mile Race Walk in two days with 6:51.72 after taking NTN Saturday - Tina Peters, 7:33.67 -

Sunday Distance Summaries by Matt Soja

Boys 800

In a sensational performance, New Yorker Justin Craddock led wire to
wire, splitting 26.4, 53:6, and 1:22.1, and winning in a New York state
record of 1:51.36, also the fastest time in the nation this year, over a
Canadian Ryan Finn who was charging hard on the last lap but was held
off by Craddock on the last turn.

Craddock, who goes to Kenmore East High School upstate but ran for his
club team (West New York Jets) in the meet, broke his indoor 800m
personal best by four seconds. It was also much faster than his outdoor
PR of 1:53.05 run last year.

Describing his indoor season, Craddock said, "my high school district
does not allow me to go to New York City meets because of the terrorist
threat, so this was actually my first race at the Armory. So far I have
been running on flat tracks, such as Rochester, where I ran the 600m in
1:20.85 without spikes, and the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, where I won
the state 600m title in 1:20.59."

Craddock used to be a long sprinter, running mostly distances from 300m
to 600m, but then he moved up and now feels that 800m is his best event.
"I intended to go out hard and hit the 600 mark in around 1:21, and at
that point I would know nobody would be able to catch me," he described
his strategy. "My high school coach writes most of my workouts, but I do
most of of them by myself, so I'm used to running alone."

Although Craddock is a senior, he is still not sure where he will go to
college. He was thinking about Eastern Michigan or Kansas State, but
this victory should expand his opportunities.

Girls 800

The girls 800 was probably the most exciting and deepest individual race
of the meet. A stellar field assembled 6 of the fastest 10 girls in the
nation this year, including the national leader Heidi Houle from Utah
and the defending champion Devon Williams from Maryland. But it was
Libby Jenke from California who set the pace for most of the fast race,
pulling the field through 400m in 1:03.5, closely followed by Samantha
Gawrych from Rhode Island, Janine Davis of New Jersey, and Houle. Jenke
still led at 600m in 1:35.2, but by then Latavia Thomas from West
Catholic PA pulled into second place, and took the lead right before the
last turn. She did not relinquish it until the end, winning the national
championship in 2:07.10, beating Janine Davis by half a second with
Jenks fading to third.

Boys 4x800m

This promised to be an exciting race with four of the top 6 teams in the
nation entered. The heavy favorites, Shaker NY took the lead from the
beginning and never looked back with Colts Neck NJ and CBA NJ duking it
out behind their back. Shaker won easily in 7:42.84, missing Syosset's
national record by just over half a second.

Shaker's splits were: Daren Myers 1:54.7, Jared Jupin 1:57.9, John Maloy
1:55.5, and Joe Belokopitsky 1:54.6

Colts Neck finished second in 7:47.69, the second best time in New
Jersey history. split: Chris Clark 1:58.1, Zach Tedoff 1:56.9, Ryan
Jagielski 1:56.0, and Craig Forys 1:56.6

Forys said, "even we were tired from Friday's DMR, we were still hoping
to win this as well. Actually our projected time was 7:47, so we hit it
right on the head. We thogh Zack was catching up to Shaker on second
leg, but it did not happen. The DMR is our better relay, so that's what
we will run at Penn."

Girls 4x800m

Since Bay Shore chose not to run a relay in this event, Suffern NY was
the favorite and did not disappoint. Even though Lake Braddock from
Virginia had the lead after the first two legs, Kara McKenna put Suffern
far ahead on the third leg and Dede Richemond brought the victory safely
home in 9:11.07

Suffern's splits: Shelby Greany 2:16.9, Caroline Heidt 2:19.5, Kara
McKenna 2:12.2, and Dede Richemond 2:22.4

After the race McKenna said that winning the title was their only goal,
so they were not concerned about running 5 seconds slower than at
Collegiate Invitational in February. "That's why I ran on the third leg
today instead of the anchor like usual. It was our coach's strategy, and
it worked," said McKenna who also split a 2:12 on the SMR anchor on
Friday.

She added that the reason Suffern ran a SMR instead of the DMR (arguably
their best relay) was to get their section record, which they
accomplished by 0.1 seconds.

Suffern's victory was made even more impressive by the fact that Greany
is only an 8th grader, but her PR is already a 2:15.

Suffern will run at Penn, but McKenna was not sure yet if it would be a
DMR, 4x800, or even a 4x400m.

Boys' Mile

The race was a three-way battle between two New Yorkers Ben White and
Dan McManamon and the winner of Friday's 5000m Mohamud Ige from
Colorado. White took it out hard, going the first quarter mile in
1:01.6, stringing out the field behind him. White, McManamon, and Ige
was the order for almost the entire race. White hit the half mile split
in 2:06.9 and three quarters in 3:12.3 and had the lead until 150m to
go, when McManamon's fierce kick brought him into the lead and assured
his victory in 4:13.44, almost a second ahead of White and two ahead of Ige.

The Shenendehowa junior was elated with his victory after a season
hampered first by an IT band injury and then hamstring problems in the
last week. It forced him to modify his training this winter with less
mileage, but he still managed to run a personal best, just beating his
January performance at Dartmouth. McManamon admitted that he "was
hanging on for dear life" to White, but he ran the race perfectly. "I
like going out fast, so this worked well for me" said the national
champion. Asked about White, McManamon said he had never raced him
before (even though they are both from upstate New York), so he was not
exactly sure what to expect.

Girls Mile

It was a slow and tactical race from the gun. Rolanda Bell from Sacred
Heart NY took the lead, going through the quarter mile in 1:16.8,
followed by Chantelle Dron and a Canadian Avril Ogrodnick. Dron took
over with 5 laps to go, but the pace was still slow as she hit the half
mile split iin 2:33.1, followed by Bell and Ogrodnick. Jenny Morgan from
Michigan moevd up to top three on fifth lap, and then into second behind
Dron. Dron and Morgan were together at the three quarter mile in 3:46.8,
but then as Drom picked up the pace only Ogrodnick was able to go with
her. Dron's 32- second last lap carried her to a victory in 4:55.46,
almost a second over the Canadian.

Dron said she had confidence in her kick (as she had already run a
2:13.88 800m this season) and the slow early pace worked well in her
advantage. Her training this winter was hampered by the vast amounts of
snow in New Hampshire, so between the roads and running indoors she had
to settle for 35-50 miles a week supplemented by cross training.

Asked about her outdoor goals, Dron replied, "I want to beat my presonal
bests, especially my 1500m PR of 4:22. Hopefully I will do it at the
Junior Nationals."

Next year the home-schooled Dron will attend Colorado State

Boys 3200

A slow, strategic race went out in 4:47 on the first mile with Steve
Chalonier of New Hampshire and John Martinez from New York leading the
pack. Martinez picked up the pace slightly at the beginning of the
second mile, dropping two 70-second quarters, followed closely by Aden
Ahmed who finished second in the 5000m Friday. With three laps left, the
New Englands runner-up Guor Majak of New Hampshire took the lead and
dropped a 61-second last quarter mile, but he was almost caught at the
finish by the charging Canadian Peter Doroshuk. Majak and Doroshuk were
both credited with the same time of 9:20.69, but after some suspense the
photo-finish determined the US runner to be the winner by the slightest
of margins. Ahmed finished third in 9:21.74 to cap an impressive double. Girls 3200
The Footlocker national XC champion Aislinn Ryan was the heavy favorite
to win this race, even though she had already run two relays before -
DMR, where led her team to victory, and the 4 x mile. As expected, Ryan
led the race wire to wire, splitting each quarter in 76.5, 78.8, 78.2,
79.8 (first mile in 5:13.3), 80.6, 81.5, 88.6, and 72.6. The only other
runner who attempted to challenge the Warwick Valley runner was the
Canadian Mandy McBean who sat on her for almost the entire race, trying
to keep up. But Aislinn's big move on 15th lap opened a pretty big gap
which McBean was unable to close. Thus Aislinn Ryan won another national
title in 10:26.64 with McBean second in 10:28.58.
"I did not feel so tired from the previous two raced, but I guess it did
affect me today," Ryan said about her race. As for her impressive
finish, the junior said, "I was never completely confident about
outkicking the Canadian girl, whom I did not know anything about,
because you cannot ever be sure of winning until you cross the finish
line."
