Council Rock North PA wins first national title
for coach Dave Marrington in 31 years

Brandon Pomerantz opened for Council Rock North, Pa. in 4:25; Grant
Stanfield followed in 4:37, and John Mahoney's 4:32 set the stage for Keith
Capecci's triumphant 4:23 anchor. It added up to an 18:00.05 victory over Saratoga Springs/Kinetic Track Club (18:04.16) and Cedar Cliff Track Club (18:10.63.)
It was also the first national title for coach Dave Marrington in his 31 years guiding Council Rock runners. Capecci is a junior, his teammates seniors. It had been close but no gold medals for Council Rock distancemen in past Nike Nationals, settling for silvers in 2001 and 2003.
"It was kind of slow (pace) at the beginning, but I knew I could get him
(the Saratoga anchor) if he tried to get by me again," Capecci said.
"I tried to make a little surge because he caught up to me so quickly. I knew if I could get him to surge with me, I could tire him out. He actually passed me. I knew with 200 meters left, though, I had him. "Because it was Nationals. I had to do it. I ran a similar race during the season when a guy caught up real quick,
like 600 or a half-mile in."So I stayed on him. I just waited and waited and kicked with 200m. I knew
if I kind of got him to go out. I was surprised at 600m when he made a little
surge. He passed me right back and that probably wasted some of his energy.
I just stayed with him until the 200.
"I had a rough rough cross country season. I was injured before the first
race. The whole season was rough from the start. I finally got back at
districts and came in like 139th.
"At states, I finished 38th. It was a big improvement. Then I took a rest." |
