Boys - Girls

Ken Cormier AZ 9:11.33
Foot Locker champ catches Saratoga NY soph Steve Murdock with desparation charge on last lap. "I may have waited a little too long," said Cormier, who was running just 2 hours after a similar kick fell just short in the mile. Cormier first appeared among the leaders at 4th in lap 14. He made a serious move at the bell, but looked beaten as late as mid-stretch. "I was lucky to catch him," Cormier said after winning on the last lunge by 0.07 second. Cormier's next stop is Arcadia.
Kate Niehaus SC 10:31.87
Wins a race where favorites faded and two lesser known girls fought to the finish, Niehaus edging Krista Anderson ND 10:32.14. Niehaus took the lead from Katelyn Kaltenbach CO and Lindsay Ferguson NY on lap 10. Anderson surged ahead on lap 15, but Niehaus countered and won the fight to the finish.

Boys

Ken Cormier wins with late rally

by Elliott Denman

Pinckney, Michigan senior Nick Katsefaras impressed with his early-AM
9:23.60 verdict over Reno sophomore Dan Geib's 9:27.34 in an unseeded
section. A young man
bearing a notable name in this sport - Arnold, Md.'s Matthew Centrowitz Jr.-
logged a 9:38.17 in fifth place. The sophomore's namesake held the American
5,000 record, was a two-time Olympian, and
now coaches rising-power American University.

But the real running was reserved for the seeded section four-plus hours
later.

Douglas, Arizona home-schooled senior Ken Cormier had aleady snared a 4:13.71
second-place in the mile at noon, and was determined to take the eight-lap
gold some two hours later. Shades-wearing Cormier did the expected, bringing it
home in 9:11.33 despite a spike wound and a loose shoelace after an all-out
duel with Saratoga Springs, NY soph phenom Steven Murdock, less than a stride
back in 9:11.40.

Broughton/Raleigh, NC junior Sandy Roberts was right up there, too, third in
9:13.37, tracked by New York State seniors Geary Gubbins (9:16.53) and Kevin
McDermott (9:19.88.). Katsefaras and Geib wound up 7-8 in overall scoring.

"You know, I was kind of feeling the mile," said FootLcker champion Cormier.
"I really didn't want to push the pace with ths guys up there really surging
and working the pace. I decided to sit back and see what happens. It worked
out for me.
"With 400 to go, I moved past a few guys. I was (now) in the top three. I
caught the second-place guy on the curve. So I really didn't want to didn't want
to get second again. I put everything I had into that last 100.."

Girls

Breakthrough win for Kate Niehaus of South Carolina

by Elliott Denman

Junior Katie Van Horn of Glendora, NJ kicked things off at 7:30 am with an
11:03.02-11:04.43 duel with Jillian Skinner of Brentwood, Tennessee, in the
first of three sections.

As slated, the pace heated up in race two with sophomore Rebekah Smeltzer of
Monroe, Mich. impressing in a 10:43.55-10:47.82 verdict over fellow soph
Elisabeth Molen of Birmingham, Alabama.

In the seeded afternoon session, Aurora, Colorado senior Katelyn Kaltenbach,
Nike one-mile champion last year in 4:45.32, was installed as favorite, but it
was not to be, not even close. As U. of North Carolina-bound KK was
struggling home seventh, destined to place eighth over-all in 10:45.92, three-time Foot
Locker XC finalist - and still a junior - Kate Niehaus of Columbia, SC was
rising to this biggest occasion of her life.

It went down to the wire and Niehaus took it, 10:31.87 to 10:32.14 over
Leeds, North Dakota senior Krista Anderson. Ocean City, NJ's Brittany Sedberry
owned the nation's fastest time, 10:37.02, coming in and had anchored OC to the DM
title Saturday, but settled for fourth in 10:40.84.

The top seven spots included just two seniors, and four sophomores made the
top 10.

"I really wanted to win coming into t, but I knew it would be a stretch,"
said Niehaus.
"I decided that if I felt good at the mile, I would push the pace. I did and
Krista came up on me in the end, so that was pretty tough.
"It was a lot of fun, though, and I elt the best I've ever felt in a race."
National champion?
"It doesn't seem very real. I'm not sure if it really happened."
