Mile Run

Boys - Girls - Elite performances in blue

Andrew Bumbalough TN 4:12.60
Sarah Bowman VA 4:46.79
After Albuquerque Academy NM sr Cody Harper led the field through a half mile in 2:09.2, "Bumby" took over in the second mile. He never lost the lead, but had to withstand the furious late charge (58-second final quarter) of Foot Locker champ Kenneth Cormier AZ 4:13.71. Lex Williams TX 4:13.80 was third, and Harper 4:14.67 held on to fourth in a solid showing. When Sarah Bowman is on, she usually wins wire to wire, streaking on top on the first turn and daring anyone to catch her. So it was at the Penn Relays last year, and so it was today. Last year's top miler, Nicole Blood of Saratoga NY, was the only runner to try to run with Bowman, and that proved futile. Bowman pulled away on the last lap for a 3-second victory.

Boys

Andrew Bumbalough wins all-American final

by Elliott Denman

They came as the delegates of Tennessee, Arizona, Michigan, New Mexico,
Washington, Florida, Virginia, Indiana, South Carolina and Maryland. And they lived
up to the diversity of their talents and backgrounds by delivering an
exciting final.

Seven broke 4:20, four more bested 4:25. The top six were seniors.

Laef Barnes, Nine Mile Falls, Washington, came in with the nation's best time
of 4:12.00, but wound up sixth in 4:16.62. Douglas, Arizona's Ken Cormier had
run a 4:15.69, and improved to 4:13.71.

But taking it all, with a mighty sprint down the final straight was
Brentwood, Tennessee's Andrew Bumbalough in 4:12.60.

Cormier closed with 58 final 400, but couldn't Bumbalough's lead was too big.

Ann Arbor, Michigan's Lex Williams (4:13.80) held off Cody Harper of
Albuquerque (4:14.67) for third, after Harper had led the field through an opening
2:09.2 800.
"I always felt like I could run a good mile," said Bumbalough.
"I never want to count anything out. Some people may think I'm more of a
two-miler which I might be, but I want to be competitive in every distance event.
"I looked up at the clock and saw that it was pretty slow (at 800.) From 800
to 1000 I picked up the pace and was just hoping to hold everybody else off.
"I knew if I went with a half to go, they wouldn't come back."
His college choice: NSY (not sure yet.)
His short list: Colorado, Wisconsin, Villanova, Georgetown and Arkansas.
Early heat winners were Rock Hill, SC's Brandon Hudgins (4:21.40) and
Miami's Bryan Sharkey (4:18.89), who wound up seventh over-all.

Alan Webb's 4:07.87 meet record in 2000 was never threatened.

Girls

Bowman-Blood duel goes to Bowman, wire to wire

by Elliott Denman

Sarah Bowman and Nicole Blood, they're good friends and friendly foes
who've been duking it out for quite a while. And they gave the crowd a rousing show
when they went at each other again at Nike 2005.

Bowman, the Warrentown, Va. senior. turned on the afterburners to take it all
in a wire-to-wire 4:46.79, over Saratoga Springs junior Blood's 4:49.94.

Bowman had won this race as a sophomore in 2003 in 4:49.67. Blood ran second
to Colorado's Katelyn Kaltenbach at Nike 2004 in 4:46.13, a national sophomore
record.

Bowman had set a US 1000-meter record this winter; Blood had run a 4:50.87
mile and 9:35.40 3,000.

Caitlyn Lane, a Saratoga freshman, was impressive, too, in a 4:50.39 third
place. Ocala, Florida junior Kelly Parrish landed a 4:50.88 fourth; Katie
Doswell, Richmond, Va. junior, was the fifth and final runner under 5 at 4:56.72.

The early section went to Spring, Texas senior Kelcee Keenan in 5:05.06, good
for seventh over-all.
"I've been sick recently, so I was a little hesitant," said Bowman.
"Going into it, I was worried but it came out OK.
"I figured Nicole Blood was going to let me do that (lead from the gun)
because at Millrose I kind of hung right on her and I thought she was going to do
the same to me.
"It's my senior year and I've been trying to go out there and have some fun.
You're never going to get this chance back, so just go have fun with it"
