Boys

Karjuan Williams 1:52.79

by Elliott Denman

Four morning sections weeded down the field, with Marcel Van Eden of Gladstone, NJ (1:57.77) and Axel Mostrag of Fork Union, Va. Prep (1:58.51) the only two under 2:00. David Brent, Monroe, Michigan senior, took the temporary event lead with his section-five 1:55.44, and just three topped that in section six.

In the seeded section 6, the South ruled as River Ridge, Louisiana soph Karjuan Williams blazed an impressive front-running 1:52.79, breaking up any suspense around the final bend; while Cullman, Alabama senior E.C. Gibbs was barely hanging on to a 1:54.16-1:54.17 verdict over Danville, Kentucky senior Patrick Morgan for the silver. Eighteen runners broke two minutes.

"Mostly. I know I wanted to go out and scorch the track and get it over with," said Williams. "I knew E.C. Gibbs could run with me. His time (coming in) was low 1:50's so I knew he could run with me. I tried to stay right in front of him. So when he kicked on me, I could kick with him.

"I knew normally in the last 200, no one can kick with me. I figured if I had the lead the last 200, I was going to take it all."

The indoor season "isn't really big" for him in Louisiana."My fastest time entering this was 1:56," he said.
"I was really scared that a lot of people were going to get me. My coach has had me doing pool and bike workouts so we could try to get ready for this. We didn't do too much pounding on the track. I had shin splints earlier so we didn't want to take any chances. I feel better now. I feel great."

Question: You have run a wicked fast 400, as well as a wicked fast 800. What
can we expect from Karjuan Williams?
"I feel like, right now, I could go 1:47 or 1:46. My older brother went 1:46 in the NCAA's (Joel Williams of Jackson State.) I think I can hit 1:46 at some point."

He's a 17-year-old sophomore.
"Right now, I'm working on my school work," he said.
" I'm going to graduate. As hard as I work on track, that's how hard I have to work on my school work. I work hard on my books and work hard on the track now."

His PRs: "Outdoor season, I went 47.2 at the JO's. Regionally, I went 47.59. So far indoor, I've run 49.05. Hopefully, you will (see more of Williams in the 400.) I could have run the 400m here, but my coach and I wanted to get the 800 out of the way.

"Definitely, (I'll run) under 1:50 (outdoors.) I'm going 1:47. I promise. I'm going to get 1:47. I can feel it."

That would put him in exclusive company as only five high schoolers have broken 1:48 outdoors -- Michael Granville (1:46.45 USR in 1996), George Kersh, Pete Richardson, Alan Webb, and Dale Scott.

Girls

Geena Gall topples favorites to defend her title

by Elliott Denman

Running in the morning unseeded sections because she wanted to run the 2-mile
in the afternoon, Houston sophomore Nichole Jones went for it from the gun,
and opened many eyes with her solid 2:11.96 triumph. As it turned out - some
five hours later - she was just 1.34 seconds shy of winning it all.

Many were picking Warrenton, Va. senior Sarah Bowman, who'd already taken the
mile in 4:46.79, to complete a double dip of the gold. Others were leaning to
St. Catherine's/Richmond, Va. junior Katie Doswell, who'd run a 2:13.4 relay
split and beat Bowman in New York at 1000 meters earlier this year..

But no, this race belonged to Flint, Michigan senior Geena Gall, the
defending champion, who won last year in a relatively slow 2:12.20.

After leading the first two laps, Bowman slipped back to fourth at the bell,
and then made a big late charge to right on Gall's shoulder off the final
turn, but could not gain any further ground.

It was a nail-biter for Gall, first in 2:10.62, to Bowman's runner-up
2:10.75. Jones was third overall, and
Bayshore, NY sophomore Brittany Sheffey claimed fourth in 2:12.18, over
Doswell's 2:13.76.

"It's what I expected," said Gall. "I knew Bowman would go out really fast. I
just stuck right behind her and started pushing on the third lap. I just
stayed under control on the fourth lap."
Did she hear Bowman's late charge?
"I could hear the crowd yelling, so I kind of felt her a little bit
"These are all great girls that I ran against today."
Her lone disappoinment: the time.
"I kind of wanted to get that record of 2:09 (point 52), but the win is good
enough for me."
Bowman's alnalysis: "I was going good until the last lap when I got cut off.
I had to stop and run around. I was little upset because I thought I could
have had her if I wouldn't have gotten cut off."
