J-Mee Samuels breaks Lashawn Merritt's record

by Elliott Denman

Two-time Nike 2004 champion Lashawn Merritt, who barely held on to his Nike 400 record - with just 2/100ths of breathing room - had no such hold on his Nike 200 mark. Now a Nike-contract pro, the Portsmouth, Va. athlete attending East Carolina University saw his Nike meet 200 mark go down the tubes.

Good as Merritt's 21.62 was last year, it couldn't compare to J-Mee Samuels' 21.22 this time around.
Samuels, the Winston-Salem, NC senior who'd placed a close second in the 60, made the 200 his personal property, powering home a full 4/10ths ahead of Merritt's old Nike figures. Also beating up on Merritt's 21.62 was runner-up Justin Oliver of Stone Mountain, Ga. - later a record-breaking 400 winner - in 21.46. Ahmad Rashad, a Flint, Michigan junior, grabbed third in 21.82, while Charles Clark, Virginia Beach, Va., used a 21.86 to place fourth over-all.

"It went better than I thought," said Samuels. "I was hoping that I would win it, but I wasn't expecting this time."

He had to re-focus after the 60, a personal disappointment.

"Yes. I was tired and I wanted to make sure I had enough time to get ready for the 200m.

"Yes, I was (disappointed in the 60.) I had some little incidents while I was running. I couldn't make it up because the race was so short. That was a good time he (Trindon Holliday) ran. I congratulated him."

Question: Arkansas won the national championship and you probably saw that Wallace Spearmon ran 20.10, did that kind of motivate you for today?

Said Samuels: "Actually, it's more than that. It has motivated me for the year. I'm going to try to aim for that time [20.10] indoor and outdoor.

"If get the right training, I can be unbelievable."

Now, on to outdoors.

He'll concentrate on "pretty much the 100m. I see that that's where there is more competition. I'll focus more on that, but I'll still be focused on the 200, too."

Bianca Knight spoils Sa'de Williams try for double

by Elliott Denman

Aiming to add the 200 crown to her 400 title, Alta Loma, California sophomore Sa'de Williams had no such luck. Oh, she won her section all right - first of two - in 24.61, but it didn't match up to Bianca Knight's sizzling 24.05 in heat two. Like Williams, Knight, of Ridgeland, Mississippi, is a sophomore.

Krista Simkins, Wissahickon, Pa. senior headed for the University of Miami, was second in Knight's section and took third over-all in 24.65. Winning the "futures division" was Krystin Lawson, an Uppper Marlboro, Md. eighth-grader, sixth in 25.51.

"After running (56.75, second to Williams'55.47) in the 400, I really didn't feel satisfied with what I ran," said Knight. "I thought the 200, being the last event of the day for me, I might as well leave with something good. "The 200 is more (my) signature race indoors. Outdoors, it's the 200 or the 400."

Knight, of course, was pleased with the 24.05 win. "Very happy," she said."I'm getting used to it (indoor racing.) I haven't gotten it yet, but I'm getting used to it. Outdoors, you can expect a lot. I have plans to a lot of things outdoors like I did last year."

And the top runners will go at each other through the 2007 season.

"Yeah, Sa'de Williams and Ebony Collins, the girls from California, usually are my competitors indoors and outdoors. It's nice running against them. They help me and I help them.
"Yeah, I'm going to Arcadia (California) April 8 and 9th. They should be there so I'll be running against them.
