Only two of the eight qualifying girls from the Northeast graduated, and nearly all of the returnees have an excellent chance to return to San Diego.
The queens to beat are definitely Nicole Blood and Aislinn Ryan. The New York juniors, 1st and 3rd here last year, have taken turns beating each other. Ryan showed her improvement by taking the supercharged Great American Nike ROC with a sterling 16:57 to Blood's 3rd, but Blood came back to win Manhattan/Eastern States the next week and then New York State Nov. 13 by 14 seconds over Ryan. It should be incredible for these national title contenders.
As they did last year, Blood's Kinetic RC team (Saratoga Springs) could have multiple qualifiers.
Lindsey Ferguson could qualify again, and so could freshman Caitlin Lane ...or almost any of their teammates on a good day.
Jersey FL 2004 qualifiers include Brittany Sedberry and Jen Clausen, each of whom were dominant in their group races last week and certainly could easily go west again. Injured last fall, 2002 qualifier Chantelle Dron is running very well again. As a club runner, she hasn't faced the other NE contenders this fall, but was 4th here in 2002. And you certainly have to consider Laura Cummings (NY), who just missed last fall, but was 7th in the region, then 4th in the nation the year before, and has been in top form again.
But there are so many other great runners in this region, whether it's the depth in New York and New Jersey, or less heralded state champs from Maryland, New Hampshire, Delaware and others. Maybe the toughest of the rest: Brittany Sheffey (NY), Cassie Hintz (ME), Nichole Lister (NY), Elise Moody-Roberts (ME), and Kathleen DiCamino (NY). It will truly be brutal.

The Northeast boys lost much, much more to graduation than their female counterparts; just one of the eight national qualifiers return -- Cory Thorne (NH) -- who certainly looks like he could live up to his favorite's billing. Thorne has a 15:01 near the top of the national list from the big Brown meet in an outstanding season. But there are no shortage of contenders for the top spot or the top eight.
Chris Barnicle, 10th last year and an 8:50 2M revelation in the spring, has swept through the NE highlighted by the best time of the day at the Manhattan Invite, a near CR 12:18. Bobby Papazian (NJ) and Ryan Sheridan (NY) were the fastest in their big state races last week, but have the Jersey MOC and NY Fed meets this weekend, the latter facing McDermott from the CHSAA. Four NE'ers made the top ten at Great American Nike ROC, led by Sam Luff (PA).
Some of the many others to fear include 4:06-miler Craig Miller, 2002 qualifier Kevin Tschirhart (NY), Guor Majak (NH, the only runner to beat Thorne), and Jeff Weiss (PA). But as veteran NE fans know, it's not necessarily the list leaders who survive when they get to Van Courtland Park. Course-recordholders open eyes, though, and Barnicle nearly broke Vanny's 2.5M mark in his big win.
This weekend will be huge as the New York Federation, New Jersey Group Meet of Champions, and Massachusetts All-Class meets take place to wrap up the regular season in the region. Then count on the FLNE race to be close; less than 10 seconds separated the top eight last year.
