Galen Rupp, the current 5K US high school record-holder, rolled to an easy victory at the USATF Junior Cross Country Championship. There were no surprises except for the weather as the runners eased their way at the start of the race. Everyone seemed determined to hold back & after 300 yards there were no clear leaders. Group of fiveBy the time they reached the ½ point of the first lap there was a group of five, which shared the lead: Rupp, Stuart Eagon, a Portland area native who runs for the University of Wisconsin, Hakon DeVries of Stanford, Christopher Landry of William & Mary & Ryan Vail, another local product who runs for Oklahoma State. The pace was still not brisk & even the trailing runners could still dream of victory as everyone seemed intent to remain relaxed. As such the leaders remained together through the first lap. In fact it was so crowded, as they rounded the corner just prior to the long hill, there was a bit of shoving in order to protect position. It was no big deal & rather typical of cross country as runners attempt to run inside when they round corners. Rupp, Eagon, DeVries move aheadThere would be no change at the front as they began the second lap at the same rather relaxed pace, but some movement began while they cruised down the long hill at the far end of the course. By the time that they rounded the turn at the short hill Rupp had forged a slight lead with Eagon taking 2 nd & DeVries 3 rd . Galen Rupp was still not in high gear as he ran up the long hill with a trail of runners not far behind. Moving along the race remained the same with only a slight increase in pace throughout . Running along during the 3 rd lap still seemed to find almost everyone performing in protect mode although a bit more of a gap was found to separate the various positions. Rupp makes moveRupp made his less than surprising move (I thought he'd move at that time commented Eagon after the race) mid way into the third lap & increased his lead, yet there was still little change behind him - just a bit of increase in the gapping of runners with Eagon taking a slightly larger lead over DeVries. After cresting the hill, Rupp began to surge to an ever increasing lead, which continued as he cruised along in the final lap. While handling the short hill DeVries briefly took second but Eagon regained his former position on the downhill. Flying down the hill Rupp left no doubt that he would be the eventual winner. His fellow Oregonian meanwhile was hard at work in cementing his position, yet Rupp still was increasing his lead to around 45 meters. Rolling up the hill Eagon opened up a large lead in second place but he was still losing ground in the race' for first. Unlike the Junior Girls on the previous day there would be no mad dash at the end to secure major positional changes. Rupp put in a workman-like effort to secure an 8 second victory & Eagon finished off his impressive race with a 5 second gap ahead of DeVries. Following those three were Landry of William & Mary, Jeremy Mineau of the University of Washington & Ryan Vail of Oklahoma State. Just missing the last qualifying spot was Bradley Harkrader of the University of Colorado & Dave Mock, another William & Mary runner, placed 8 th .
