PORTAGE MI -- Portage is a city in Michigan adjacent to Kalamazoo along I-94. Like so many small communities next to larger cities, Portage is a growing community, with an economy heavy into pharmaceuticals and auto production. Portage was originally settled in 1830 when a Mr. Herring constructed the first log cabin here. In 1836, it was first registered as "Sweetland" when John E. Howard started the Post Office. In 1838, Moses Austin helped bring together the Township, and the town was renamed after Portage Creek, its main stream.
The Portage Invitational is held on the grounds of Portage West Middle School. It's a large open area, mostly flat with a few rolling hills and woods. The grounds were enhanced by tents for food, sporting goods sales and lots of music to run by. Facilities plus beautiful cool but comfortable weather plus great kids and parents make for a fun cross country experience.
