NTN California region rankings - Pre-Season
The NTN regional rankings are the basis of the NTN team selection process. The top two teams in each region at the end of the season will be invited to compete in the Nike Team Nationals in Portland Dec. 4. The third and fourth place teams in each region are considered for the four national at-large selections.

| Royal might boast the best depth this side of “York-ville”, with eight runners (including four at sub-9:38 for 3200m) able to interchange effectively. Don Lugo is coming off another great summer, with four runners at 9:32 or faster last track
season lending it an amazing quartet. The sleeper here could be El Camino of
Oceanside, a squad riddled with injury, sickness and bad luck in cross-country, then
rolling to a 10:11.96 distance medley relay clocking at the Penn Relays in track. |
Ventura returns very strong top 5 and a key runner from injury, but look for the crew to lay low early on. Fountain Valley could be the most improved team in the nation,
with a sub-95:00 Mt. Sac type team since being bolstered by three first-rate additions this summer. Murrieta Valley (five returnees), 2003 national Top 10 powers
College Park and Sultana, and super deep Miramonte might give California the deepest
region in the nation once the championship meets unfold. |

NTN will select two teams from each region, plus four at large teams to compete in the cross country team championships. The Harrier magazine has published regional rankings for years for the four Foot Locker regions. We reviewed data for 2003 and selected the top 10 teams in each of the eight new NTN regions.
