Penn Relays and US records both fall

Jamaica's new sprint queen Simone Facey (11.22 and 22.71 in the Jamaican national championship) anchored Vere Tech JAM's stirring defeat of defending Penn Relays champion Poly Long Beach CA. Facey rose her arms skyward and streaked 150 meters around the first turn shrieking with joy.

Jack Pfeiffer's Penn Relays preview was eerily prophetic. Speaking of Poly, Pfeiffer wrote, "They have vowed to break the national record at Penn. Of course, they could do that and still not win the race." That is exactly what happened. Anneisha McLaughlin's third leg appeared to give Holmwood Tech a slight lead over Vere's Facey entering the stretch, with Poly's Shalonda Solomon third. Facey and Solomon both passed Holmwood anchor Nyoka Cole, and Facey held her edge over Solomon.

Vere Tech, Poly and Holmwood Tech JAM 44.62 all beat the old Penn Relays record (44.78), and Poly broke the US record. (44.63 by Alief Elsik TX last year).

Edwin Allen JAM wins 4x800 in furious finish.
Jamaican rivals Edwin Allen and Holmwood Tech duelled throughout, taking turns on the lead, with Holmwood slightly ahead at the bell. Edwin Allen moved for the lead on the turn but couldn't get around. Edwin Allen moved again in the stretch and got up by a split second. Just before the finish, Holmwood dropped its baton. Although Holmwood was timed in 8:50.26, the stadium announcer said the results were not official because "you have to finish with the baton." Holmwood's anchor then circled around and picked up the baton and crossed the finish line again for an official time of 9:00.56, still good enough for second place.

Girls 4x400: No Contest
Poly Long Beach CA 3:36.85 wire to wire win
Stung by their loss in the 4x100 (albeit a national record), Poly erased all doubt by taking the lead
on the second leg and icing the victory with a 52.7 anchor by Shalonda Solomon.

:Poly girls were subdued after victory

Chris Spooner 4:09.9 Mile
Lewisburg PA senior stalked Victor Gras MA through 2:07 half and 3:11 three quarters and then out kicked Gras 4:10.17 on the last lap. Eric Mack NC 4:12.89 was third.

Shenendehowa 10:10.77 romps in DMR
New York squad takes command at the end of the first leg and is never headed, although El Camino CA 10:11.96 and Cumberland Valley PA 10:12.03 hung tough.

Fitzgerald 8:22.42 catches Khadraoui 8:25.20 in 3000.
North Hills PA sr Ian Fitzgerald (24), second here last year, won a 2-man race with JFK Patterson NJ sr Mohamed Khadraoui (1) with a surge on the last lap. Ahmed Haji CT (4) was running third at this point late in the race.
