Marathon - Young Runners - El Gherrouj

Young runners lead USA sweep of 4x400 relays
Team USA was spurred throughout the Olympic Games by a new wave of young runners not far removed from high school days, including a sweep of the 4x400 relays on the next to last day. photos by Vic Sailer's PhotoRun
Mens 4x400 - 400m gold medal winner Jeremy Wariner (Lamar Arlington TX 2002) hands off to Darold Williamson as Michael Johnson alma mater Baylor provides the third and fourth legs of USA's victory in 2:55.91, just 0.17 off the Olympic record. Wariner was the Texas 5A champ in 2002 at both 200 and 400 meters..
Women's 4x400 -- Monique Henderson (Morse San Diego CA 2001) hands off to Sanya Richards (St. Thomas Aquinas FL 2002) in the middle of USA's 3:19.01 victory. They are the two fastest US high school 400m runners ever, with Henderson setting a national record of 50.74 in the 2000 California State Meet and Richards 50.69 beating both Henderson and the record in the 2002 US Junior Nationals at Stanford.
Two golds for El Gherrouj

Hicham El Gherrouj, best 1500 meter runner in the world for the last 10 years, lost at Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000, but made up for it big time this year by doubling in the 1500 and 5000. That's TWO gold medals, he signals emphatically.

Vanderlei Lima of Brazil was leading the race by as much as 29 seconds until he was attacked by a man who ran from the crowd in the 23rd mile. Lima returned to the race and finished third. He was passed quickly by Baldini and later Keflizighi. The attacker was identified as Cornelius Horan, an Irish citizen who disrupted the 2003 British Grand Prix formula one auto race by walking on to the track.
