400 - Cedric Goodman GA 45.94 upsets Elzie Coleman NY 47.02
In the featured race of the meet, all the pre-race hype centered on Newburgh NY sr Elzie Coleman. Coleman obliterated the national record for an indoor 400 meters at Simplot Games in February (45.92), and he was openly gunning for the US Olympic Trials qualifying standard of 45.85. But Newnan GA sr Cedric Goodman, whose 46.35 win at Golden West last year should have warned everyone he is a serious threat, turned it into his show instead. Goodman bolted in front from the start and had a solid lead down the backstretch. On the inside of Goodman, Coleman closed steadily and made up all the stagger on the far turn, taking the lead. But Goodman had plenty in reserve. He kicked it up a notch down the stretch and won convincingly. Redan GA jr justin Oliver also passed Coleman near the finish.
