Speed to burn

That should be the theme of this year's Great Southwest. In boys races, Xavier (X-Man) Carter of Florida leads an eastern invasion that will be contested vigorously by the Texas burners led by Texas 5A double sprint champion, Ivory Williams. Texas' great hurdlers and jumpers will transfer their in-state rivalries to Albuquerque, and Florida's Wes Stockbarger lends heft to the throwing events. The girls battles will be more homegrown, with the Texas all star lineup of Dallas Skyline, Krystin Lacy, Cleo Tyson, Katie Baker, Rachel Foster, et al challenged by Colorado's Ashley Owens and Arizona's Jessica Onyepunuka. The usual state all star relays will be challenged this year by a national 4x400 all star squad of Xavier Carter FL, Cedric Goodman GA, Jason Richardson TX, and Mark Dillard LA, who will go after the meet record of 3:08.16.

Texas' Erica McLain will continue her quest for the national record in triple jump, and Epley Bullock and Inika McPherson will continue their Texas state meet battle at the 6-foot level in high jump. Colorado's Sarah Stevens is top seeded in the throws.
GSW is one of the few major meets to offer multi-events, and top notch duels are expected between Adam Fretwell TX and Michael Hurd ID in decathlon, and Molly Kennedy TN and Kimberly Brown TX in heptathlon. [John Dye]

Erica McLain

from "bubble head freshman" to Stanford recruit

She has her eye on the national triple jump record in Albuquerque Saturday.

This is a special post-season meet for the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah. State rivalries are promoted by having all star relay teams represent each state. Track-rich Texas sent several teams last year, and one of them, consisting of all girls from Alief Elsik HS, set a new national record. The meet started in 1930 and then was sidelined for 25 years by the Great Depression and World War II, resuming in 1978. The meet was held in Arizona until 2001, when the New Mexico coaches association took it over. Competition is enhanced by designating certain events as elite events, with nationally ranked athletes from outside the Southwest invited.

Prior Years

2003 - Alief Elsik TX girls 44.63 break national 4x100 record. MVP honors go to the hurdle doublers - Kerron Clement and Alandra Sherman. More doubles by Earvin Parker TX, Leif Arrhenius UT, Amber Harper UT, and Michelle Carter TX.
Alandra Sherman was the best hurdler in the US last year as a junior and she doubled here to win MVP honors. Jason Richardson (red) hit the last hurdle, costing him the 110m race against Texas rival Kerron Clement, 13.61 to 13.66. Richardson should return this year as the favorite.

2002 - Texas sprinters return in force.

2001 - Multi event stars Donovan Kilmartin and Lauren Reimer featured in first meet at Albuquerque.

2000 - Last year in Tempe.

1999 - Alexis Joyce, Nicole Ireland, Sara Gorton, Abby Miller, Josh Rohatinsky, Brett Andrus, Jake Garlick.
