4x 800m Relay Boys Invitational

Winner: Upland S. Gonzalez(Sr), Greenberg(Jr), Davila(Fr), Gamboa(Fr) 7:52.50
Runner-up: Shenendehowa, 7:53.53. 3rd place: Edison, 7:54.03

Upland’s Gonzalez and Shenendehowa’s, national indoor 4 x Mile record holders, 1st leg opened with a solid 1:56 to lead El Camino by one second (1:57). Upland’s second leg, Greenberg kept and opened the lead with a 57,1:58(3:54) as Shenendehowa, 3:56(2:00) maintained their second place position. N. Monterrey came home third in 3:59.

Upland’s Davila kept the lead through the next lap(60), as Shenendehowa narrowed the gap to one second. Shenendehowa’s third leg finally wrestled away the lead and came home with a 1:59(5:55), to lead Upland by one second(2:02, 5:56). Shenendehowa ( 56, 6:51) continued to lead Upland’s Gamboa(56,6:52)into the final quarter by one second. Edison’s Gatel who was nowhere in sight at the
handoff was coming on hard as he raced his team into threatening third.

Upland’s Gamboa, who showed tremendous grit for a freshman, came home best (1:56.3,7:52.3) to just edge Shenendehowa(1:58,7:53) Meanwhile, Edison’s Gatel ate up the final 200m nearly catching the dueling leaders. His 1:52.5 leg brought them into 3rd, 7:54.

Gamboa, anchor
“ It was pretty tough. I was feeling pretty confident. Our first three runners went out there and had a pretty big lead. Albert came in and kept us up there. I knew all I had to do was beat that guy and that’s what I did. I didn’t know who Shenendehowa was. I really don’t pay attention to that stuff. I think that beat our best time. Our best time before this was 8:04. We’re finally getting into our speed phase and getting up and peaking.”

4 x 200

Winner: Glenville( Fuqua, Cloud, O’Niel, Ginn) 1:26.00. Runner-up: Long Beach Wilson 1:28.47

Glenville’s lead-off Fuqua, in lane 5, made up the stagger on Long Beach Poly, in lane 6 as the two team raced down the backstretch. Glenville’s Donte Cloud maintained the lead bringing him team through the first half in an even 43.

Poly settled into second as Glenville’s O’Neil broke first. Poly held their ground as they sped down the backstretch. Ted Ginn got the baton and blasted the curve, opening the margin all the way to the finish line and showing no ill effects from a strain suffered at the NIKE Indoor Championships. The time was 1:26.00.

Ginn, anchor
“ Whooooo, it was fun for my first race. First meet out, first race, it felt good. I got my leg iced up and rub down. I took some ibuprofen so I’m OK. We didn’t travel this far for nothing. We paid all this money, we have to come out here and do something. The time is blazing. We aren’t even all in shape yet. Wait until we are all in shape, you going to see something crazy.”

4 x 110m Shuttle Hurdles

Winner: James Logan( Craddock, Nicosia, Chiles, Balumbu(Jr)] 1:00.70
Runner-Up: Canyon Springs

Logan’s Craddock looked sharp as he skimmed over hurdles powerfully getting the lead. Covina was a solid second and kept it close through leg two. Covina shot into the lead on the strength of their number three hurdler who gave them the lead. Covina’s anchor was moving well until the final few hurdle when Logan’s Balumbu began to close. Over the final few hurdles, Balumbu was clean as Covina’s anchor slammed into the last couple of hurdles.

Balumbu, anchor
“I was kind of scared. I thought we would be in the lead the whole time, but I had to run and we got it anyway so everything was alright. For me, having someone in front of me, made me work harder. Usually, I’m in the lead so it doesn’t make me run as hard. The last few hurdles, I saw that I was gaining so I didn’t panic after I finally caught him. I was pretty clean. [Having Craddock up front] always gives us confidence."

800m Sprint Medley

Winner: Glenville 1:31.28

Glennville opened with a 43.0 to take the lead. A hard fought 48.0 anchor by Ginn helped them to pull away over the final leg to win 3 seconds. Ginn was noticeably favoring his right upper quad/groin area and seemed hobbled by it afterwards. As of Friday night, he was scheduled to run the open 400m.

4xMile Relay

Winner: Don Lugo[Reuben Ramirez(Sr), Mark Moreno(Sr), Alfred Gonzales(So), and Nathan Wolack(Sr)] 17:23.67 - 4:19, 4:21, 4:22, 4:21
Runner-Up: Shenendehowa 17:37.03 - 4:18,4:29,4:25, 4:24

A tight pack of favorites opened with laps of 62, 67(2:09), 65(3:14) before Shenendehowa was able to kick home best in 4:18. Don Lugo was a step back in 4:19 while Red Bank had trouble with hand-off ultimately dropping the baton and putting them back in the pack.

Shenendehowa maintained their lead as they and Don Lugo separated themselves from the pack by 800m; Shenendehowa, 64(5:22), 69(6:31) with a pack of teams at 6:40. Don Lugo then went back into the lead sprinting away over the final lap to get a 7 second edge over Shenendehowa at the exchange; Don Lugo 67(7:38), 62(8:40, 4:21), Shenendehowa 67(7:38), 69(8:47, 4:29). Don Lugo kept the 7 second lead and extended it through the next leg running 62(9:42), 66(10:48), 67(11:55), and 67(13:02, 4:22).

Shenendehowa was now 10 seconds back in 13:12 ( 4:25) at the final exchange. On the final leg, Don Lugo continued to put more distance on Shenendehowa to come home in a national leading and 15th fastest time ever, 17:23.67(4:21). Shenendehowa anchor finished in second, 17:36(4:24).

Alfred Gonzales(So), 3rd leg
“It was interesting (running against Shenendehowa). They broke the indoor national record and everything and Red Bank too. So we were looking for a good race and for a good challenge. I was working hard in practice and working those last laps, 3rd and 4th laps, that’s what it’s all about. We were looking for under 17:20, but we ran our best so that’s all we could get. I think we could have run a little bit faster though. Hopefully, we’ll get known. We won states and everything. It’s kind fo nice everyone cheering for us, especially around here. Hopefully, we’ll see. Maybe later on in the year, in North Carolina(AOC’s), if we go, we’ll get another chance. That’s on our mind.”
