Deak beat Mead WA jr Laef Barnes 4:13.13. The race was one big pack until Deak came out of the pack on the backstretch of lap 3 and went through three quarters in 3:11. Barnes, the national indoor leader, moved on top on the backstretch of lap 4 and appeared the winner until Deak came back in the stretch to win. "I knew something was going on when I heard the crowd roar," Barnes said.

Last year's 3200m was called the greatest 8 lapper ever in the US, with 11 runners under 9 minutes and 31 under 9:20. This year, as the event was stretched 18 meters to a full 2 miles, there were 6 under 9:00. With 3.2 second adjustments, there were 10 under 9 minutes at metric distance and 29 under 9:20. Almost as good as 2003. In the Invitational 2-mile, favored Shadrack Kiptoo NM 8:52.56 ended pack running by taking the lead on the fifth lap. But Bumbalough took command on the 7th lap and pulled away convincingly.

A three-way finish between great anchors was the final treat of the meet in the 165th event. It took the photo finish crew 10 minutes to decide between Poly Long Beach CA and Glenville OH. They finally found 2 thousandths of a second of separation with Poly 3:16.940 and Glenville 3:16.942. Poly Derrick Jones charged up the stretch to get the win over Glenville's Ted Ginn. Newburgh NY 3:17.42 was third after Elzie Coleman made up a bunch of ground from fifth place at the exchange.

Kaltenbach and Nelson, the last two Foot Locker cross country national champions, waged a pulsating duel, running within a step of each other the entire race while taking turns on the lead. Nelson led late, but Kaltenbach surged in front at the bell, only to have Nelson surge in front on the backstretch. Kaltenbach then surged last on the turn and held the advantage through the stretch. They ran the fastest two times of the season.
