This race figured to belong to Steve Strickland, ace of Mountain View UT's high ranked cross country teams, and it did, but not without a few anxious moments. Todd Clancy of Washington had a daylight lead through 800 meters in 2:22. The field then started to bunch up and Dallas Eborn ID took over the lead with Strickland right behind. It stayed this way through 1600 meters in 4:54. Strickland ran outside Eborn's shoulder for a couple of laps before moving into first on lap 11. Two laps later, a new leader emerged with Jared Bienlien UT. At the bell, Strickland kicked it in and started a winning push with Jared Rohatinsky UT (brother of former Simplot champ Josh Rohatinsky) closing fast for an exciting near miss. |
Philadelphia seventh grader Alexandra Brasington was the youngest runner in the race, but she ran like a veteran. After setting all the pace through 1600 meters in 5:30.3, she was challenged by Wyoming senior Gretchen Fagley, who took the lead on lap 10. Brasington answered calmly a lap later and finished much the strongest. |
