La Cueva Albuquerque NM sr Shadrack Kiptoo, third at the Foot Locker cross country finals in December, won as he pleased, taking the lead from John Jay NY sr Hakon Devries on lap 3 and widening the margin steadily the rest of the way. Devries, who ran a 4:07 anchor on John Jay's winning DMR at NSIC in New York Friday night, faded to sixth in his slowest effort of a great season. Reno NV sr Jonathan Cardenas ran a steady race for second, and Albemarle VA sr Hari Mix closed well for third. Both Mix and Devries will run for Stanford next year. The race was essentially over when Kiptoo went through a mile in 4:30.4 with daylight on the rest. Kiptoo was 40 meters ahead when he looked over his shoulder on lap 11 and saw no one there. |
