Race 47 Boys Team - Don Lugo CA high school, ranked 12th in the country by The Harrier, spotted US#22 Royal the race winner (jr Dylan Jaedtke 15:01) and then placed runners 2 through 5 ahead of their Royal counterparts to win comfortably. Don Lugo 81 (4-8-9-26-34) and Royal 128 (1-21-27-28-51). Fitsum Tesfa 15:10 led Don Lugo in fourth place.
Race 48 Boys Individual - This was billed as a challenge to the course record and it didn't disappoint. Loyola jr Mark Matusak proved best of a star studded field as he crossed the finish line in 14:33, tying for third best time ever at Mt. SAC and pulling seven more runners under 15 minutes -- Mohamed Trafeh 14:38, Troy Swier 14:53, John Wihtol 14:54, Jake Schmitt 14:54, Yosef Ghebray 14:55, Luis Medina 14:56, and Jeremy Mineau 14:59. Michael Haddan sprinted to a lead immediately and went through 800 meters in 2:08. It seemed suicidal and it was, as Haddan faded to 14th (15:29). Trafeh and Matusak were close after a mile in 4:33 and took the lead up Poop Out Hill (1.9 miles) as Haddan slipped to fifth. Matusak gained command in the third mile behind Reservoir Hill and finished as a clear winner. He tied Tim Nelson 2002 time to share third on the all-time Mt. SAC list behind Ryan Hall 14:28 and Jeff Nelson 14:32. Matusak went to the top of the all-time Junior list ahead of Troy Swier (14:38 last year).
Race 49 Girls Team - This race also lived up to expectations as three national top 20 teams fought a spirited battle that ended in the order of their ranking: US#11 Murrieta Valley CA 67, US#13 Reno NV 80, and US#20 Sultana CA 101. For nearly two miles, Reno was running 1-2-3 led by the Lawrence sisters (senior Collier and freshman Marie). But Murrieta Valley proved once again that cross country is a team game. First, MV ace Liza Pasciuto and freshman star Liana Boucher rallied to split off Reno's third. Then, Murrieta Valley's fourth and fifth finished ahead of Reno's fourth to make up the deficit. Collier Lawrence won in 17:32 with sister Marie a second behind. Pasciuto was 3rd (18:03) and Boucher 4th (18;08).
Race 50 Girls Individual - Laguna Creek CA sr Rachel Bryan 17:14 was a handy 22-second winner to gain her second straight Mt. SAC championship with the fastest time in the meet each year (17:08 last year). Bryan took command over Clair Rethmeier on Reservoir Hill and cruised home. Hawaii's Tia Ferguson, who raced last year for San Marcos in Santa Barbara, rallied to get second in 17:36. Rethmeier finished 2 seconds later and led San Pasqual CA to the team title with 80 points.

Friday - Div 3-4-5 Sweepstakes

Harvard-Westlake sr Lindsay Flacks 17:32 and San Luis Obispo sr Dan Nunn 15:10 (Alex Dunn 15:11) are fastest of the day. Campolindo wins Division 3 Boys Sweeps, and Santa Margarita wins girls. Hopi AZ sweeps Division 4 team titles. Woodcrest Christian girls and Santa Clara boys win Div 5 Sweeps titles. Sweeps races are run on the full course (2.91 miles) as air quality improved during the afternoon. Earlier races were shortened to 2 miles because of the heat, plus the smoke and ash fallout from brush fires that started Thursday night in the Los Angeles basin. Some teams stayed home because of the uncertainties.
