  • W HJ final - Amy Acuff, having best year of her career, goes out at 6-4.75 and misses medal stand. RSA's Hestrie Cloete wins at 6-9.
  • M 4x100 final - depleted USA sprint corps on a mission and wins in 38.06 over Great Britain 38.08. USA team is John Capel, Bernard Williams, Darvis Patton and J.J. Johnson, with J.J. Johnson catching Dwain Chambers of Great Britain on anchor..
  • W 1500 final - sans USA. Russia's Tatyana Tomashova 3:58.52 upsets Turkey's Sureyya Ayhan 3:59.04.
  • M 5000 final - 1500m king Hicham El Gherrouj 12:52.83 just misses difficult double by 0.04 second to Kenya's 18-year-old Eliud Kipchoge 12:52.79, who caught El Gherrouj in the stretch and beat him on a lean. Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele 12:53.12, dropping down from 10k, was third. Jorge Torres 13:43.37 is 15th.
  • W 4x400 - USA wins in 3:22.63, world leading time this year (Me'Lisa Barber, Demetria Washington, Jearl Miles Clark, and Sanya Richards). Russia 3:22.91 nips Jamaica 3:22.92 for second. Russia led until a poor anchor exchange, when Richards shot to the lead on the first turn and held off both Russia and fast closing Jamaica in the stretch.
  • M 4x400 - USA wins in 2:58.88 (Calvin Harrison, Tyree Washington, Derrick Brew, and Jerome Young), with France 2:58.96 second and Jamaica 2:59.60 third.
