Brian McLeod(19) entered as the defending champ, but waited for the pace to
slow to go for the win. The early pace set by Mariann Fussleman(12) was
faster than McLeod expected, so she followed though a 69.9 first 400m. Dacia
Barr(8), then took over the lead as Calandra Stewart(17) moved in right
behind her. The next 400m slowed considerably, 77.4, 2:27.4 which seemed to
awaken McLeod. By 1k, 3:05, she was off and running looking stronger as the
race wore on. A 75, 3:42.5 for the next 400m gave her the cushion as she
raced against the clock. Behind her Bostick and Barr battled for second not
losing ground to McLeod. McLeod was able to maintain her lead to finish in
72.6, 4:55.1( 4:55.66 officially)

Brianna McLeod
" It was out a little fast. I wanted to stay in sight of the leader so I
went out with them. My goal was to negative split. It was right where my
goal was. I wanted to go 4:54-4:55 I was happy with it. My half time was
what I planned. Overall it was a good race. I really wanted a meet record,
so that's what I was shooting for. I knew three girls would be right with
me and chase me.
I felt a little pressure. It was kind of nerve racking and calm myself down
and realize the best is all I can do.
I have a meet at home in Oklahoma and then the Kansas relays next week."
