The Beach tide rolls again. Apparently in tough against two Jamaican teams that had run 3:35 and 3:36 this year, Poly Long Beach CA was invincible once again. After three fast preliminary legs, it came down to the anchors of Poly of California and Holmwood Tech of Jamaica. And Poly's superstar anchor Shalonda Solomon once more was up to the challenge. Holmwood 3:36.84 moved strongly on the far turn, but Solomon reacted with fury and won going away with a split of 51.6, fastest ever in the history of the Penn Relays. Poly took down cross town Long Beach rival Wilson's national record of 3:35.72, setting off jubilant screams and high fives among the whole Poly delegation. Poly had flirted with the record last year at 3:35.99, which was the only non-Wilson mark in the top six all time in Jack Shepard's HIGH SCHOOL TRACK annual.

G-4x100: Poly Long Beach 44.96!!!

Girls 4x100
Super swift Southern California squad overcomes less than perfect exchanges with Shalonda Solomon's blazing anchor. Solomon streaked across the finish line (left) almost a second in front of Holmwood Tech JAM 45.70. Two more Jamaican teams followed -- St. Jago 45.79 and Edwin Allen 46.01 -- before William Penn PA's 46.27, which continued coach Tim Hickey's streak of 21 years having a team in the relay championships at Penn. Poly improved on its US#1 season time of 45.01 set 2 weeks ago at the Arcadia Invitational. Poly stays the second fastest US team ever with the 3rd fastest time ever. The record holder is the St. Bernard's Playa del Rey CA team of 1997, which has the two fastest times including the record of 44.70.

G-4x800: Edwin Allen JAM 8:52.59, Poly Long Beach CA 8:58.00

The Jamaican team ran away from the field in the last two legs. Poly was 1-2 the entire way and ran the fastest US time this season.
