Kay-Ann Thompson's anchor gives Jamaica its only relay win of this year's carnival.

The Jamaican team poked along in the prelims, winning their section in 9:17.67, but stood up strong in the finals, running away from Poly Long Beach on Kay-Ann Thompson's 2:08.4 anchor. Poly's 8:58.00 second place time was a California state record and the 10th fastest US team ever.

Boys & Girls NY 9:02.07, which set US records here the last 2 years (8:50.40 last year and 8:51.60 in 2001), made it a 3-team race much of the way before slipping to fourth behind surprising Bishop Loughlin NY 9:02.04.

After 5 laps, there was a 3-team race between Poly, Edwin Allen, and Boys & Girls.
But by the middle of Kay-Ann Thompson's anchor leg, the race was over.
