Reggie Witherspoon turns to outdoor -
Southern California girls powers travel 2000 miles east -
Southeastern state champions challenge themselves

by John Dye

MOBILE AL 4/1/03 -- After burning up the indoor circuit, Reggie Witherspoon (pictured at left at Virginia Tech February 1) now turns to outdoor goals. In the just-concluded indoor season, the Wheeler Marietta GA senior ran the fastest 400 meters ever (46.11), the 3rd fastest 200 meters ever (21.14), and the 3rd fastest 300 meters ever (33.31).

Witherspoon's goal for outdoor? A shocking sub-45 second 400 meters. That has been achieved only once, by the US high school record holder Darrell Robinson at 44.69 in 1982. The rest of the all time list in Jack Shepard's High School Track annual spreads out from 45.01 to 45.87.

Witherspoon's 46.08 last year makes him the fastest returning 2-lapper in the country this year. But don't think that Reggie is in for a cakewalk under lights at St. Paul's Episcopal High School Saturday night. The nation's second fastest 400 meter returnee at 46.58, local favorite Arthur Davis, will defend his MVP award (Davis won the 400 here last year with Witherspoon 4th). Also present will be Palm Bay FL jr Xavier Carter (46.90, Florida 3A champion, 3rd leading returnee) and Newman GA's Cedric Goodman (47.07, USATF JO intermediate champion, 6th leading returnee). In any case, the meet record is in jeopardy (47.19 by Jonathan Fortenberry in 2001 and Willie Quinnie in 1999).

Witherspoon, Carter, and Davis will also do battle in the 200, along with Louisiana stars Albert Turner and Jerald Watson.

The girls 100 and 200 are up for grabs because last year's MVP girl, Natchez MS sr Janice Davis, withdrew from her second straight meet because of a sore hamstring. The clear favorite now is Collins Hill GA jr Courtney Champion, who ran the fastest 55 meters indoors this year (6.85) while beating Davis at LSU January 11. Champion's 200m best last year was two ticks ahead of Davis at 23.78.

Two perennial contenders for the California state championship, arguably the toughest state title in the US, will transplant their rivalry 2,000 miles east from Southern California. J.W. North, Riverside has won 2 of the last 3 California state championships and Wilson Long Beach the other. Going into this year, Wilson owned the national records in indoor 4x100, indoor 4x400, and outdoor 4x400. They are especially dominant in the 4x400 record book with 7 of the 8 fastest times ever run indoors and 5 of the fastest 6 outdoors. Wilson and North runners and jumpers are sprinkled throughout the events. In the sprint relays, worthy regional contenders such as Magnet Baton Rouge LA and Courtney Champion's Collins Hill GA will put up a good fight. All three relay records (47.20, 3:54.55 and 9:32.50) are in serious jeopardy. Wilson already has a 46.19 4x100 and 3:42.03 4x400 this season and Ashley Freeman 2:12.91 led four Wilson girls under 2:20 in the open 800 at the Pasadena Games 2 weeks ago.

A major theme of the meet is the challenge of regional state champions going against each other and against outsiders. The events are loaded with state champions from the Southeastern states. Outsiders include the West Springfield VA boys 4x800 relay (7:50.25 US#2), Virginia AAA and Nike Indoor champions; Maysfield KY sr Andy Fryman, Nike Indoor shot put champion (64-5, US#1); Western Branch VA sr Leslie Treherne, Virginia AAA indoor 500m champion (1:13.92 US#4); and Vineland NJ 4x400 relay, Nike Indoor champion. Vineland and Witherspoon's Wheeler GA squad could push each other under the meet record (3:16.84 by Jefferson Davis HS, Montgomery AL, in 1995).
