Colorado U. freshman counters Oregon HS jr Galen Rupp with 58.5-second last lap. Nelson set all the pace except when Rupp made his move on the next to last lap. Nelson responded and had the lead back 200 meters later.

Nelson takes over lead at 1000 meters

4200 meters - lead group dwindles to three, as Rupp readies his move and Meindl hangs in third.

Rupp took the lead at about 4300 meters, but held it for only 200 meters as Nelson roared back and closed with a 58.5 second last lap to win going away.
