Media Conference

a DyeStat featured meet - on-site coverage

Six senior elite athletes talked and answered questions at the media conference on Wednesday June 18. Here are some of the things they said.

Tim Montgomery 100m

"Now I see what Maurice was under for 6 years [in the spotlight as world 100 meter record holder bearing the title of "the world's fastest man,"] Montgomery even alluded to the choice of red or blue pills in the movie The Matrix.Montgomery said personal issues had sidelined him for a while, but now "the rain clouds are starting to spread and the son is starting to shine."

Montgomery addressed his controversial decision to change coaches to Charlie Francis, who coached Ben Johnson when his 1988 Olympic 100 meter victory over Carl Lewis was taken away because of drug use."I was 12 years old in 1988," Montgomery said. "Whatever happened to Ben Johnson, he had to have technique. I went to find out how he got that technique. I judge people by their character, not their past." (Montgomery has dropped Francis as his coach after the negative publicity.)

Maurice Greene 200m

As defending world 100m champion, Greene gets a bye into the World Championships in Paris, so he will only run the 200m here.

During Greene's Q&A session, Tim Montgomery spoke, saying, "Would you like to have it [the world record] back?" Greene answered quickly, " I WILL get it back." As for the 100 meter final Sunday, Greene said it was wide open. "It will be exciting. I want to watch. No one can be sure they're on the team ..... except me."

Justin Gatlin 100m and 200m

The 2-time NCAA sprint champion, now in his first year in the pros, said his hamstring injury (a "twinge" in Mexico City last month) is OK and he is ready. Asked what he expected in the meet, Gatlin quickly responded, "the gold -- I don't train for second or third."
Nicole Teeter 800m

Teeter discussed her injuries that kept her sidelined since the USA Indoor championships, but she said she thinks she is ready. She said she was glad it was 3 rounds, so she would have some time to regain her competitive edge.
Inger Miller 200m

Miller said her 2-year siege of "one injury after another" forced her to look inward and examine her own persona and her attitude toward the sport. "Now, I'm really enjoying it again," said the 10-year veteran pro.
Tom Pappas decathlon

Pappas expects to be in the 8600 to 8800 point range in the coming year.
