Boys Pole Vault

Donovan Kilmartin 16-6

photos by John Dye, quotes by Ricky Quintana

Eagle ID sr Donovan Kilmartin opened at 16 feet when only two other vaulters were left. He soared over the bar with a foot to spare, drawing a big roar from the crowd. The next vaulter on the runway laughed and said, "You mean I have to follow that!" Kilmartin, who cleared 17-3.5 a week ago, intended to try 17-0, 17-4, and 17-8, but he got stopped at 17-0 with timing errors. He had plenty of height on all three tries but hit the bar on the way down or up.

The versatile Kilmartin is staying in California to try for the high school decathlon record April 16 and 17 in the Mt. SAC Relays invitational multi events at Azusa Pacific College, which is a college men's competition. Kilmartin's goal is 7700 points, which would shatter the high school record of 7359 with international implements. Kilmartin already holds the US junior record of 7440. Kilmartin will also compete in the open men's pole vault in the Mt. SAC Relays Saturday April 19.

Ricky Quintana's Quotes

Donovan Kilmartin: I started off in warm-ups went really well and then I got into the competitions and the first few jumps were really good. Really clean. I got to 17’ and instead of vaulting and relaxing and taking an easy jump, I beared down and messed up. I came down on it. I’ve seen better days, but I’ll have more comps.
RQ: Can you explain why you concentrated on just the pole vault today?
Kilmartin: Wednesday and Thursday are the Mt. Sac Relays and I’m participating in I don’t know what you call it.. the gold or upper class division in the decath. I want to stay fresh so I only wanted to do one event here and go and be fresh and be ready for the national record in the decath at the relays.
RQ: Is that unusual to compete in just one event?
Kilmartin: Not normally. Usually I do four events or as many as our track meets allow. It just depends on where I’m at.
RQ: So you don’t mind just focusing on just one event?
Kilmartin: No. It’s actually easy. I don’t have to worry about running back and forth across the field all the time. I can just focus one event. Even though it didn’t help me tonight. Yeah know. When you have it, you just have to do what you can do.
RQ: Who coaches you?
Kilmartin: Normally, it’s two guys out of Boise , Idaho. Tim Sever and Mark Murdock. Mark’ s normally my coach I’m always running and training with. They’re with Team Idaho. My dad kinds of sets up where I go to meets.
RQ: Were your coaches here today?
Kilmartin: No.
RQ: Does that hurt or help you?
Kilmartin: I don’t think it does either, but I guess it does because no one knows how to adjust like they do. They know my cues. Eventually, I have to get away from it and learn how to do it on my own. It’s just another experience.
RQ: So you are going to spend the week out here?
Kilmartin: I’m staying here for the whole week. Brian Nokoyama from Mt. Sac is helping me out. I’m going to stay with him and his wife. I going to try and chill. Maybe stay there for one or two days. And then go and do the Mt. Sac Relays. My dad has a friend down here after that and then we’re flying back after the open vault for the Mt. Sac Relays. That’s on Saturday.
