Phillip Reid 4:09.44

Rio Mesa CA senior Phillip Reid bided his time as Alex Tatu of Virginia carried a sizable lead to the bell. Then, when Tatu gave way suddenly on the first turn, Reid surprised himself with his surge to the front in the last 300 meters. "I honestly wasn’t expecting to win. I thought I was going to get 2nd, 3rd or 4th. I just felt so happy," Reid said afterwards.

End lap 1 -- Mike Chavez leads
End lap 2 - Alex Tatu opens lead,
followed by Steve Shepherd and Reid
End lap 3 -- Reid leads pack gaining on Tatu.
Stretch -- Reid takes command, followed by Joaquin Chapa, Shepherd, and Chavez.

Ricky Quintana's Quotes

Phil Reid
It went out kind of slow. I was expecting them to go faster. I just dealt the hand that I was given. That went by real fast. It was tough.
RQ: When Tatu got ahead of you, what were you thinking?
Reid: I was like.. When he went ahead of me, I was like, “he made his move too early” because I had a lot left. So, I was like “man, I’m going to catch him.”
Other reporter: You were never concerned though?
Reid: the first couple of laps, I was a little uncomfortable.
Other reporter: But with a lap to go, you felt pretty confident?
Reid. Oh yeah. I was like. Actually I caught him.. I closed on him a lot in before the last lap. And I was there, I’m going to get after this and win it. I tried to make a big surge with 300 to go. I was just pulling as hard as I could. You know, it worked. I thought he’d come back. I have to give a lot of credit to my coaches. That was great. I got to see Alan Webb.
RQ: You beat a tough field. What do you think about that?
Reid: Honestly, I thought it would take a lot more to beat them. I thought it’d be a lean. I thought I heard my dad go “whoaaaaaaaa!” when I was finishing which was cool. The legs are burning, but my legs are ok.
Other reporter: You seem pretty excited. Was that because of the tough field?
Reid: No, I honestly wasn’t expecting to win. I thought I was going to get 2nd, 3rd or 4th. I just felt so happy. This is kind of the deciding point of the season. Times just don’t get much faster, hopefully. It was real exciting. All these guys around the nation, it’s just a treat to race against them. I have to give them a lot of credit to them.
