After Laura Cummings broke on top, Blood took the lead on the second of 11 laps, only to give way to Lambie and Trotter in the middle stages. On the next to last lap, Blood spurted to the front and opened up daylight the rest of the way. She finished with the second fastest Millrose mile winner since they started running girls races in 1984, but the third fastest time. Sarah Schwald set the meet record of 4:49.94 in 1989 with Saratoga's Cheri Goddard second in 4:50.33.
ESPN2 showed the entire race and Dwight Stone interviewed Blood after the race on camera. "It was one of the best races of my life," Blood said.

Walt Murphy's Report

The high school girls mile may have been the
highlight of the meet for most of the 11,000 specators in attendance.
The field, put together by Jim Spier, was one of the strongest ever, and
included the event’s first set of twins, Katy and Amanda Trotter of Red Bank
Regional(NJ).

Nicole Blood, the precocious 14-year old frosh from Saratoga Springs(NY),
immediately went to the lead after the gun and led the field through the
first 1/4-mile in about 73.4. Ari Lambie, who has been battling various illnesses ever since winning the
Foot Locker Northeast Regional X-C title last November, soon moved into 2nd
place, followed by Katy Trotter. Those three had a small gap on the rest of
the field as they went through the 1/2-mile in 2:26.

Lambie, who attends The Bromfield School in Harvard,MA, (the alma mater of
the great Lynn Jennings), took the lead a lap later as they passed the
3/4-mile split in 3:40. Blood moved back into 2nd on the backstretch, then,
with less than 2-laps to go, passed Lambie on the turn and maded her run for
home.

The race was still a 3-way battle until Blood, who became a crowd favorite
when it was announced that she was only a frosh, started pulling away on the
final backstretch, going on to win in 4:52.00, the 3rd fastest time in the
20-year history of the event. The two fastest times came in the1989 race,
which was won by Sarah Schwald(4:49.94) over Cheri Goddard-Kenah(4:50.33),
who also attended Saratoga Springs. Lambie(4:53.14) held off Katy
Trotter(4:53.17) for 2nd, as both cracked the
Millrose all-time top-ten performance list.
