Walt Murphy's Report

The field for the boys H.S. mile included Andrew “Kippy” Keino, the 3rd son
of Kenyan legend Kip Keino to run in this race. Dad won the Wanamaker Mile in
1996, brother Bob won the H.S. mile in 1994, and Martin the oldest of the
three, finished 2nd in the 1990 race.

David Murphy (Hendricken,RI) took the field through the first 1/4-mile in
64.5, followed by Brian Dalpiaz(Sayville,NY) , who was 3rd in last year’s
race. Keino took over the lead after 4 laps, and started to push the pace,
with Dalpiaz the only one to go with him. The order stayed the same at the
1/2-mile split (2:07.3), but they were soon joined by Matt Debole(Mt.Tabor,NC),
last year’s Penn Relays mile champ, as they went through 3/4-mile in 3:12.6.

With 1-1/2 laps to go, Debole and Dalpiaz both went by the fading Keino, and
the crowd got into it as the two leaders sprinted over the final lap. Debole
held on for the win(4:16.50-4:17.20). Keino wound up 4th.

The significance of the AOC Mile in Raleigh, NC on June 15, 2002, was that the first six were all Juniors, so post-meet chatter, was about a re-run of this race at 2003 Millrose Games…and, why not!! We DID obtain 2 of the 6, the others were unavailable for various reasons.
