A packed house of nearly 5100 at the Randal Tyson Track Center in
Fayetteville, Arkansas was treated to an exciting race in the Randal
Tyson High School Boys Mile race as part of the Razorback-Tyson Foods
Invitational on February 15. Travis Feltner of Russellville (AR) set
the early lead as the rabbit through splits of 29.30-59.76-1:31.77 as
brother Chase, the local favorite, and the rest of the field were
tightly bunched. Kippy Keino of Fork Union (VA) slid into the lead with
four laps left in 2:04.42 and held onto the lead through five laps on
the 200m banked Mondo track, home to the NCAA championships since 2000,
as he clicked off a 32.31 for a 2:36.73. Adam Perkins of Liberty (MO)
slipped in behind Keino on lap 6 as the two passed with 400m left in
3:08.13. Perkins and Keino were in a two-man race when Perkins took the
lead entering the back turn as the capacity crowd cheered loudly for the
young milers. Perkins lengthened his lead over the last 200m with a
32.21 to grab the win in 4:11.78 as Keino crossed in 4:12.97. Mike Poe
of Etiwanda (CA) took 3rd in 4:16.92 just ahead of Josh Harper of West
Plains (MO) in 4:18.10 and Sam Bair, Jr. of Shaler (PA) in 4:19.41.
