60m Hurdles Kerron Clement (4) beat Brandys Green (2) in the dash to the finish.
It was the first indoor meet for Clement, the Texas 5A champ at 110 and
300m hurdles last year and the US#2 all time for 400 meter hurdles (49.77).
The shorter distance didn't seem to bother the lanky Clement. "I
knew I could do it," he said, and then announced his goals for his
senior year: US records at both 300 and 400 meter hurdles. by Pete Cava and Ricky Quintana Finals- In another tight battle, Kerron Clement (LaPorte, TX) got past Brandys Green (Indianapolis, IN) for the hurdles title. Clement’s 7.84 time bettered Green’s by .02. Clement, a Florida signee and a native of Trinidad, said his first indoor race ever “went smooth. The last two hurdles, I tried to pick it up.” Clement says indoors and outdoors are all the same to him. “I just like to run the hurdles,” he said. I prefer the longer distance, 400 meter hurdles. I want to run 13.3 in the hurdles, and I want to run a national (prep) record in the 300 (hurdles). I ran 35.78 last year. The record is 35.32.” Clement, who has dual citizenship, isn’t sure if he’ll run internationally for Trinidad or the U.S. “I have no idea. We’ll see when the time comes.”
Semi's- Texans Kerron Clement and Jason Richardson both dipped under the eight-second mark to qualify for the final. Clement (LaPorte) took first in the second semi in 7.93 while Richardson (Cedar Hill) won the first semi in 7.97. Rounding out the field for the final will be Richard LaCroix (Marine City, MA), Theodore Ginn (Cleveland, OH), Brandys Green (Indianapolis) and Terry Thornton (Petersburg, VA). The top victim of the semis was Jeff Porter (Somerset, NJ). Approaching the fourth hurdle, Porter appeared to lose his rhythm and then tangled with the barrier. He gamely finished the race, but in last place with a time of 8.52. Porter, one of the nation’s top prep hurdlers, had no luck in Landover. Saturday, he tripped on the anchor leg of the 4x55 meter shuttle hurdles. Also squeezed out of the final as Basil Campbell (Trenton, NJ), the
fastest non-qualifier at 8.07. Campbell was third in heat two behind Clement
and Ginn. Prelims- Jeff Porter (Somerset, NJ) posted the fastest time of Sunday morning’s prelims, qualiying for the semifinal round with a time of 7.91. Other notable entries who made it through the first round included Kerron Clement (LaPorte, TX), Jason Richardson (Cedar Hill, TX), Brandys Green (Indianapolis, IN) and Dwight Porter (Newport News, VA). Winners of the seven heats plus the next 11 fastest qualified for the
semis. One casualty was Verrol Jackson (Schenectady, NY), who finished
third in the first heat in 8.36 and didn’t advance. Results
