Toughest Courses

U. of Southern Indiana

by Matt Clark

University Of Southern Indiana (USI) has the toughest
5k course I have ever ran, that includes the IU State
Meet course if you have ever seen it.

The race starts
out with a gradual down hill then a sharp right, down
another hill, then you would take a left and go into
the woods and eventually hit a roughly 250 meter
uphill that has got a nice slope to it. then you would
go back down another hill (which was significantly
tougher hill to run, but that course got changed.) The
middle of the hill is the 1 mile marker.

After going down the hill there's a little bit of a straight away
then another 30-40 meter steep hill. The rest of this
mile you run a loop in the field, and during the
season when the temp gets to 90+, that area of the
course just zaps you without you knowing it.

Then you'll hit another set of woods and take a left go
through some slight rolling hills and then hit about a
60 meter 165 degree hill. after that you'll take
another downhill and go up another slightly steep hill
out of the woods.

By now its into the last K and you'll
take a right turn and go straight a little bit before
going down a hill that takes an immediate sharp, right
hand turn up another 30 meter, steep hill. Then
its a tiny down hill then up another hill, flat then
up another hill around the poll and down a sidehill to
the finish.

The course has changed 3 times over the
last 3 years and this one is probably the easiest of
the 3 types. No runner has ever broken 16:00 (Course
record Held by F.J. Reitz Alum David Martin in 16:18)
for mens 5k.

Important meets this course holds are the
Mater Dei Invitational, Evansville City Championships,
Southern Indiana Athletic Conference, and Evansville Sectional.
